Gingrich: I don't own a vacation home in New Hampshire because, unlike some people, I am not rich

The “unlike some people” part isn’t stated, merely implied. But c’mon. He’s laying it on with a trowel here.

----------- Less than 12 hours after finishing in fourth place in the Iowa caucuses, Newt Gingrich opened a new, more aggressive chapter in his campaign, taking pointed shots at rivals Mitt Romney and Ron Paul, who both finished ahead of Gingrich. At one point, Gingrich hinted he would make Romney’s personal wealth an issue, telling a reporter “I’m not rich.”…

When asked why he chose to congratulate Santorum and not Romney on his caucus success, the former House speaker said, “I find it amazing the news media continues to say [Romney’s] the most electable Republican when he can’t even break out of his own party.… The fact is, Gov. Romney in the end has a very limited appeal in conservative party.”

Later, in a campaign stop in Laconia, Gingrich’s kept up his attack – and it got personal. Asked by a local reporter if he would buy a home in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, where Romney has a summer home, Gingrich replied, “No, I can’t afford things like that, I’m not rich.” His wife, Callista, added a jab at Romney as well. “We have one home,” she demurred. The Romneys own two summer homes, including one in California. ------------------

Surely a man eligible for a six-figure line of credit at Tiffany’s has the means to buy himself a cottage in the sticks. Or maybe more: I’ll bet $1.6 million from Freddie Mac would get you something nice and airy in Hanover. This is the second time that Gin

What is really interesting is that so many comments on this threads (and most other Newt-related FR threads) keep mentioning about Callista's buying expensive jewelry at Tiffany's (falsely, as she had 2 untapped $500K lines of credit at different times, since closed).

Most of Newt's detractors on FR constantly talk and whine about what he (and his companies) made as part of typical consulting service, usually in very envious terms.

Yet now they have suddenly taken to saying that it's he who is guilty of "politics of envy" and "class warfare" and they are tired of his "whining" when he simply answers questions, and if he didn't say or imply something they infer, no matter - they'll just project their own envy and whining into his "implied words and thought."

Well, why not... after all Gingrich is the "liberal progressive" and the "establishment insider" extraordinaire... Really sad to see this on FR.

“’ll bet $1.6 million from Freddie Mac would get you something nice...”

Maybe the writer missed the part that it was $1.6 over 5-6 years, mostly going for staff and office expenses, and that Gingrich himself got @ 30K/year from that contract with his company. Or maybe the author just isn’t familiar with running a business, and how much it costs before profit?

Newt just lost the last of my hope for him as a candidate. You channel Obama and class warfare get out , don’t even try to run as a conservative.

Newt’s not rich? I wonder what his definition of rich is.

Too funny...a guy who makes far more than almost everyone (all due to having his snout in the government trough mind you) complaining about someone richer than himself. What an idiotic line of attack. Newt is a fool, and a hypocrite.

I live in McLean, Va, the same place that Newt lives. His house is worth well over a million dollars and probably several million.

That’ll be one hell of an inspiring life story Mitt can tell at the Republican convention. I was the son of a millionaire governor who, against all odds, grew up to be a millionaire governor.

At least McCain had a good bio.

Ah but Mittney Mouse is sooooo very “electable.” Or so the Mittstream Media would have us believe.

Give it a rest. Newt wrote and sold 22 books. I realize some of the Newt-haters are borderline illiterate, can’t understand analogies, believe anything Mittney Mouse says, etc. But the rest of us would rather you go off and play Minesweeper in another window than keep posting here.

Better get a preview of it now because that’s all you’re going to hear during the general election. I thought Mittney said we were supposed to “battle-test” our candidates in the primary so they can withstand attacks from Obama later? Now you’re saying he can’t take a little heat?

There isn’t one person who hasn’t seen a dishonest Mittney Mouse attack ad that has ever thought of Newt Gingrich as anything but a conservative. Ask any liberal if Newt’s a conservative or a liberal and prepare to have your face laughed in.

So very respectful or Reagan and aware of history as if Reagan knew nothing of liberal republicans (Ford, Dole, Rockefeller, Bush Sr., ...). While we don’t like to acknowledge progress for some strange reason - do take note that the party is WELL to the right of where it was in 76/80. I get it, you want your candidate to win but consider that facts matter, history matters, style matters, focus matters and that you and Newt are paying short attention to key subjects.

I thought Newt would step in for Cain when he left and he was my vote. Newt’s been nothing but the media characterization of Newt - unfocused, erratic, and volatile. He had a huge opportunity and he missed it.

Romney fans are depressed that they cannot openly support the Lib on FR.

What’s interesting, is that FR will not let up. This is an anti-Romney website and it is what it is. Romney has no open support on one if the not the largest Conservative websites going into a General Election. ‘

That’s a major Problem for Romney. He doesn’t have the Base. He will never be elected as he does not have the base. Those are the facts.

He’s a helluva lot richer in convervatism than Mitt Romney. And richer in great accomplishments than the whole Republican field put together. Let’s not count Perry since he never had to fight anyone in his government over anything or faced any challenges, other than rubber stamping everything his conservative legislature sends him and collecting his early pension while continuing to draw a salary.

HEY! Nanny-State Newt! Stop stepping on your lower lip!

Big deal! You got tackled in Iowa, and no ref came to your rescue. Boo-hoo!

BTW, Romney behaves in a manner that is comfortable for him. Romney owns that problem, not you.

Just be yourself, stay on message, and keep on moving towards the goal.

BTW, Romney would make a good Secretary of Statements for you. (Delayed revenge can be soooooooo sweet!)

Newt has the Red States and will only gain momentum throughout the primary.

Newt knows how to govern and will lead out nation back from the abyss.

Why don’t you go on his YouTube channel and watch some of his town halls, forums, etc.? He is incredibly well-versed, warm and thoughtful in answering questions and explaining his policy. You sound like someone who hasn’t done anything but watched select clips from the Mittsteam Media. It’s just stunning that any supposed conservative would swallow the media’s narrative hook, line and sinker after seeing what they did to carry Obama into office.

This looks to be a pretty much crap thread from reading the lying title and then you had to add this:

"The “unlike some people” part isn’t stated, merely implied. But c’mon. He’s laying it on with a trowel here."

...which pretty much proves the first impression.
