Iowa Caucuses: Ron Paul vs. the weather

Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX), a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, is likely to finish in the top-tier of Republican presidential candidates in the Iowa Caucuses on Tuesday, January 3rd. In fact, Mr. Paul predicted a “first or second” place finish in the Iowa Caucuses on Bloomberg Television’s “Political Capital with Al Hunt.”

However, political commentators like former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee have predicted that Mr. Paul will do better if the weather is bad. “If the weather is bad and it’s real tough to get out, Ron Paul would win,” Mr. Huckabee said on Fox News’ “Fox Sunday with Chris Wallace.” Mr. Huckabee posited that if the weather is better Mr. Romney will win. However, Mr. Huckabee acknowledged that Mr. Paul has “people that would walk over broken glass for him and they’d break the glass just to be able to say they did it.”

According to AccuWeather, the weather on January 3rd is unlikely to prevent anyone from participating in the Iowa Caucuses. Alex Sosnowski, an expert senior meteorologist for AccuWeather, writes that “the first votes during the first major electoral event for the presidential campaign should take place in storm-free but cold weather conditions.” Mr. Sosnowski adds that “a clear to partly cloudy sky is forecast with no precipitation Tuesday evening across Iowa.”

Regardless of the weather on the date of the Iowa Caucuses, Mr. Paul and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney are fighting for a first place finish in the Hawkeye State. Mr. Paul finished one point ahead of Mr. Romney in a Public Policy Polling poll of likely Iowa Republican caucusgoers released Monday. However, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum is now in third place with 18 percent of the votes. Mr. Paul, Mr. Romney and Mr. Santorum will be in the running for a top-tier finish in Iowa.

Bad weather has been demonstrated in many elections, to not favor liberals.
My Mom called liberals fair weather voters.
So we shall see.
If Paul finishes less than first will he finally go away?

It’s going to be warmer than a typical average January, and ironically... Windy. The Paulistinians would turn out no matter what... and won’t matter as much as the pollsters think.

Yep, it has been a pretty mild winter and the caucus voters have shown up in bad weather.

I think that's unlikely. IIRC in 2008 he never formally ended his campaign. Just stopped campaigning.

I don't think he's in this to win it. He wants to influence the debate.
