I fear that if Romney were to become the Republican nominee, Trump would jump in the race as an independent and siphon off enough conservative votes to ensure an Obama victory a la Perot and Clinton. Trump has already changed his registration to independent.

Same fear here, but after Santorum's great showing in Iowa last night I'm even more optimistic that Romney won't be our nominee:-)
