English As Official US Language: Perry Says, 'I Can Agree With That' By NBC's Carrie Dann

MASON CITY, IOWA -- Gov. Rick Perry on Friday appeared to endorse making English the official language of the United States, agreeing with a questioner who put forward a strongly worded defense of the idea.

"I don't know how the rest of the conservatives in the room feel," said a questioner at Perry's last event of the day. "Personally, I'm fed up with seeing the directions on every single product on every single shelf of every single store written in foreign languages. And I'd like to say English should be the official language of government in this country." "That is a statement. That's not a question. And I can agree with that," Perry responded without elaborating further.

A spokesperson for the governor said that while Perry has in the past been open to changing the law to make English the official language, he has typically said he views other economic and social issues as more pressing matters for legislation.

Perry, accompanied by his wife, daughter and son-in-law, spoke to about 50 Republicans at a fundraiser for the Cerro Gordo County GOP in Mason City. Also in attendance was Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, the influential west Iowa conservative whose endorsement has long been sought after by Republican presidential candidates.

Perry had the potential to be my candidate, but he seems so damned namby-pamby all the time. “I can agree with that”? Yeah, whatever.

He seems to hop from subject to subject, looking for something that will help him catch on, and it’s getting tiring to watch.

I wish he would just go ahead and put himself out of our misery and go back to Texas.

I wish he’d go back home and take all of the Republican candidates with him. We can start over on Feb. 1 with a whole new slate or something.

Worst bunch of candidates in any presidential race in my lifetime.

I can't believe that you are talking about the same Rick Perry I have been supporting! What sort of namby-pamby names his political manifesto FED UP?

What sort of namby-pamby puts out spots like this one?

Maybe you just don't like the way he parts his hair, so be it, but calling him namby-pamby just makes folks think you haven't been paying attention.

This man knows no decency. He has taught with red tooth and claw to keep Tex-Mex kids in Spanish-only scholastic ghettoes. And yes, I mean Tex-Mex; that’s not a Yankee’s mistake. If you have a Spanish last name in Perry’s Tejas, you may still get treated like an illiterate, Spanish-only Mexican, and placed in Spanish-only classes, even if you know English brilliantly and not a lick of Spanish.

He has no respect for the Constitution. If the Founding Fathers didn’t see fit to make English the official language of this country, far be it from me to second guess them. I’m sick of these liberal, “living breathing document,” types that want to disregard the Constitution at every turn.

Perry has been my governor for eons now it seems, and he has exasperated me no end at times. His weak stances on illegals and e-verify and several other things has occasionally put me in an absolute fury of irritation.

But, I will give him credit for one thing... he’s a hell of stickler on the 10th Ammendment. And I admit that’s a really, really big thing with me, which I don’t really get much from the other candidates. It does give him a little bit of an edge with me, although he invariably manages to erase this advantage by being such a ridiculous stumblebum on the campaign trail.

But the whole blasted field is ridiculous! Dispiriting beyond belief. What a pathetic letdown after last year’s optimism and exhileration courtesy the Tea Parties.

With you as an example of how his supporters try to woo voters, no wonder he's battling for the honor of last place.

Naming his manifesto 'Fed Up'---ooooh, what a tough guy.

I gave a specific reason why I don't support him. You chose to claim it's because of his hair. You are either willfully ignorant, or believe that talking tough means something in a campaign. As the soon-to-be-homeward-bound Perry will soon learn, talk is cheap. As you've shown.
