I think you’re right. He got pummeled in the 90’s right after leading the 94 elections - and no one could have anticipated how bad it would be. That includes Newt. He did cave to the pummeling after a while. I think anyone would have seen it coming or withstood it.
But he’s been through that now. I think he almost likes it. His “been there, done that” is a huge help.
