Burke had been part of that early group of midwesterners (he was a native of Chicago) that relocated to FL around after WW2 and started getting elected to office as Republicans (he actually had run for Congress as long ago as 1955). He apparently also had interesting “appetites” in his personal life (that would be lampooned to a degree in the Demi Moore film, “Striptease”, with Burt Reynolds playing a Burke-esque figure). He insisted on running for reelection despite his peccadilloes coming to light in 1978 (when he was arrested outside a strip club) and he lost to ex-Republican, Broward Co. Sheriff Ed Stack (interestingly, back when Stack was the GOP Mayor of Pompano Beach in the ‘60s, he had run against Burke in the 1966 primary and almost beat him there).
Although Stack had a liberal voting record, Dem primary voters decided to go with a younger (and Jewish, I believe) nominee, Alan Becker, (Stack was 70) in 1980. However, that Democrat had spent so many resources in taking out Stack in the primary (add to that the anger over the Marielitos, which was saddled on Democrat candidates) that he was ultimately outmatched in the general against then-Fort Lauderdale Mayor Clay Shaw, and the district swung back to the GOP. When a new Democrat district was created in 1982 for Broward, Becker tried, but lost in the Dem primary to Larry Smith, who would occupy that seat for the next decade (the district, with some tweaks, is now occupied by the dingbat Miss Debbie).
As an aside, in the time that Burke had been building his political career, the Broward-based district had gone from being a WASPy GOP seat that was almost a de facto suburb of Chicago because of all the Midwesterners, to a liberal Jewish enclave made up of Northeasterners — the district had gone from supporting Nixon in a landslide to Carter by ‘76, so Burke was in some trouble on demographics (he nearly lost in ‘74 and ran ahead of Ford to retain his seat in ‘76 against that same opponent). They did swing back to Reagan by 1980 (with 56%, with Ford having gotten 47% in ‘76 and Nixon 72% in ‘72).
Of the current imperfect lot, he's my first choice too, but I'm under no misapprehensions about his chance - it's going to be an uphill struggle and the odds are against him.
If you haven't read this book, you should! The latest review makes the point that Bill Clinton, as President, fooled around with an intern in the White House (one of his many victims) and he's more popular than ever, yet Army Special Forces Sgt Kelly Stewart engages in a one night stand, in Germany, and gets 8 years in prison and labeled a sex offender!! I hope you will read this excellent book.

Today my son sleeps all alone in the cold
in the close distance the bombs explode.
A good soldier, a hell of a man
he keeps watch in Afghanistan.
This was his choice, his duty, his calling
I stand proud but tears often are falling.
Each day I pray for GOD to keep him strong
let angels keep watch and nothing go wrong.
The pictures he sends reflect what our country stands for
the hearts that he touches of a people at war.
With children he shares water, candy and food
to ease for a day their sombering mood.
A fourth generation soldier in combat tonight
he is out on a mission, family pride is his light.
His brothers also serve, one soldier one Marine.
For our nation, my sons are one hell of a team.
It’s Christmas eve, we should all be together
what separates us is more than just weather.
A call of duty to country brings all 3 satisfaction
the youngest at war far away, ready for action.
Their mom all alone prays to GOD up above
keep my son safe, let him know he is loved.

George Washington is turning over in his grave!!

Everyday I watch this administration mistreat our military and put all of us further and further in danger. This is outrageous that this administration is responding and appeasing a criminal organization! I ask myself how much are the American people going to put up with?!! I am amazed at the apathy, I really am. It seems it is far worse than it was before 9/11! I see the game and it seems to be working. Totally destroy the economy, get all the folks totally focused on their own plight, subvert the country, then little by little allow a take over!
I'll say this again, the economy means NOTHING, if you are not safe!!!!!!!!! Let me say it again another way, remember what happened to our economy after 9/11?!!! I am a solution oriented person, my parents told me a long time ago that crying gets you nowhere! My Solution: We all need to stick together, quit beating each other up, and work toward one important goal and that is GET RID OF THIS ADMINISTRATION BEFORE WE ARE NOTHING BUT SLAVES TO A DICTATOR HELL BENT ON DESTROYING OUR WAY OF LIFE!

You can also pick up the phone tomorrow (they are not in today) and call your Congress and Senators but most of all, call Buck McKeon, Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee...
