Newt: The idea that you're going to wage a bombing campaign that accurately takes out all the Iranian Nuclear program I think is a fantasy. It would be a gigantic mess, enormous collateral civilian casualties.

Better there than here.
Bush tried to shake everyone to wake up...there is an axis of evil !!!!
Obama, our Muslim president has assisted the Middle east and the Muslims in every way possible.
God help us!!
There you go. He just took the military option off the table. Good job Newt!!
Leave it to Newt to choose to do nothing in the face of a Islamoterrorist nuclear threat.
Perhaps Newty has something else in mind—like meaningless economic sanctions or strongly worded UN condemnations.
But that’s Newt. Smaertest man in the universe.
They already have a paramilitary group, the Basijj, said to be numbered in the millions. If everyone else is going to throw their support behind the mullahs, they're all combatants.
There was a time when such things were not a consideration. Oddly enough, that was the last time we had complete victory in an armed conflict.
“He just took the military option off the table.”
I don’t think it ever really was any more than it was for Russia and China back in the day. We just need to make sure we can make a believable promise that destruction will be mutual. And it would help if we quit trading with folks that are or are potential threats.
We should send Ron Paul there to make friends with the tyrants. / sarc
Smart move by Gingrich to take MASSIVE, OVERT action off the table, with both Russia and China saying they would back Iran if attacked.
Notice he said nothing about COVERT actions?
It is widely known that Iran and other enemies build their weapons sites in or near population centers to take advantage of the squemish West’s aversion to “civilian casualties”.
As with the terror camps and the PLO, you must hit the military targets and let THEM figure out THEY are endangering civilians.
It would help if the State Dept. issued that warning!
Thank goodness he didn’t say, ‘Fantasywriter to bomb Iran’. Don’t know how I’d have managed it.
On a serious note, the alternative to bombing them seems worse. If you don’t bomb, aren’t you just saying let the madmen of Iran nuke the great satan in an effort to bring on the 12th Imam?
whatever. how’s newts boots taste anyway?
Time to cue up that classic Paul Shanklin hit song, Bomb Bomb Iran!

Didn’t that quote come from the last debate? If so, it’s not in context; because he offered bombing as a necessary lat resort.
Mutual deterrence doesn’t work if you are dealing w insane religious fanatics who think the only way to usher in the 12th Imam—their version of a messiah—is to start a cataclysmic war.
He specifically chose “bombing campaign”. This is probably correct. A bombing campaign probably cannot destroy the Iranian nuclear program on its own. He did not say “waging war” or “putting boots on the Iranian ground” would be insufficient.
Reading through Newts specifically parsed language choice, he sees the military option still alive and well.
“Mutual deterrence doesnt work if you are dealing w insane religious fanatics who think the only way to usher in the 12th Imamtheir version of a messiahis to start a cataclysmic war.”
That may be, but for a country as squeamish about war as we are and every day producing less and less of its own stuff, it really makes no sense to run around threatening to go to war with every country we don’t like.
“There you go. He just took the military option off the table. Good job Newt!!”
My sentiments exactly.
It’s a dangerous world Newt. Peace through strength (sound familiar Mr. Historian?), and that includes not going wobbly with the mullahs.
Allowing some of the planets’ most suicidal lunatics to get nuclear weapons isn’t a great option either. Why tell them that bombing their nuke facilities isn’t even an option? It only emboldens them, and makes them thing ‘Allah’ is protecting them.
