In Oregon, food stamps will buy you Starbucks frappuccinos

But, if I were on food stamps in Oregon, I’d indulge in a luxury coffee concoction far more frequently than I do. Why? Because my Oregon Trail card would cover it. Sure, taxpayers would be on the hook for my caffeine addiction, but I wouldn’t think about that.

Fox 12 in Oregon reports:

With the help of Jackie Fowler, who has a “supplemental nutrition card” or Oregon Trail Card, Fox 12 visited an in-store Starbucks within a Safeway in the town of Salem. Fowler purchased a tall Frappuccino and a slice of pumpkin bread — and paid for both using her Oregon Trail card.

“It’s crazy,” Fowler told Fox 12, showing off the receipt for $5.25.

“They’re overpriced as it is,” said Fowler of the specialty drink. “That’s money that somebody could be eating with — a loaf of bread, a gallon of milk.” Fowler, who made the purchase only for the purpose of Fox 12′s story, says she thinks it’s a huge misuse of the food assistance program.

On a serious note now, this report makes me thankful for folks like Jackie Fowler. Actually, if I were on food stamps in Oregon, I would want to be just like her. But, sadly, it’s all too true that many people spend other people’s money more easily than they spend their own — and, if a system can be abused, some people will abuse it.

A spokesman with the Oregon State Department of Human Services said they will look into the matter. I hope so. Stories like this one — however small it seems in isolation — help to explain why so many people have so little faith in government programs.

In Washington you can use your EBT card to buy pizzas at Papa Murphy’s take and bake. An efficient use of your public assistance dollar.

Well, you can use the EBT card if a market will accept it. STBX inside stores are not actually STBX. If the person behind the counter has a name tag they are not employed by STBX, these stores are called licensed stores. So it is not STBX accepting the EBT card but the grocer who is accepting it.

At our local rural minimart I have seen countless people buying soda, gatorade, chips, and deli items ( very expensive as it is a minimart) w/ their card, their aunt’s card, grandma’s card, etc.

Meanwhile, my 76 year old mother, a cancer survivor, works at her local library to pay bills & pay taxes so that leeches can do this..................

This is one of the many reasons for my screen name. It makes me sick!

And who lobbies for the rules which determine what items may be purchased with foo stams?

Certainly not the welfare queens. Know why Bob Dole, representing an agri state, was called the King of Food Stamps?!

I learned about food stamps when I was about eight. The guy in front of my father at the supermarket checkout line was using them and my father nudged me in the ribs and gave me the look.

When we got out to the car he said "Son, did you see those coupons that guy used? Those were paid for using my tax money, and someday there will be an a$$hole like that in front of you at the supermarket." The guy with food stamps was buying new york strips, a cut of meat I never saw at my house.

He was right. I live in WA state where people collect food stamps and housing assistance while living in a $1.2 million dollar house. Meanwhile, the state keeps cutting services to the disabled due to.....wait for it.....lack of funds.

I was in the dollar last week and the woman in front of me used her EBT card to buy a whole pile of Little Princess birthday party stuff — plates, cups, prizes, tiaras, table decorations and so on.

And she didn’t say “thanks,” either!

Good to know my tax dollars are being used to spread cheer during the holiday season. The few dollars that managed to stay in my wallet have been making do the past several days with dried pinto beans and a frozen ham bone saved from last Christmas, mac ‘n cheese yesterday and mac ‘n cheese with 4 weinies today.

I see worse as a cashier. Not only do people by junk food with EBT cards, they then have plenty of money to buy dvds, etc. Just before Thanksgiving, I sold a guy a PS3, “Do you want the service plan with that?” He decided to get it, telling he that this was his third PS3 in two years, the others burned out. More than $400. He then bought junk food with his EBT card. But he was in a wheelchair....

Let me toss out a mitigating aspect...

Rather than rage at our fellow citizens, the welfare cheats, why not rage at the billions of dollars sent by our government to every shit hole corner of the world?

I'm more than ready to shrug off the burden of Atlas.

Ask the feds for your share of what they sent to Pakistan, Egypt, Mexico, the many nations of Africa, Europe etc.

I'm sick of eating ramen noodles myself...

I believe that because whenever I have early breakfast duty I am amazed at two things: the huge size & assortment of items given to the kids and the namebrand products. Yoplait, Otis Spunkmeyer, Poptarts, cereals, etc. These companies are making a fortune on the free breakfast program. It just seems to never end and someone somewhere is making a profit off of us, the taxpayers.
