No holiday for legislators without tax cut: Obama

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - President Barack Obama suggested Friday that Congress may not enjoy a long holiday break if the House and Senate have not passed an extension of the payroll-tax cut. "We need to get this done. And I expect that it's going to get done before Congress leaves. Otherwise, Congress may not be leaving and we can all spend Christmas here together," Obama said.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama's remarks were "a measure of the seriousness of the issue at hand."

Rival bills to extend a payroll tax cut have failed to collect the 60 votes needed in the U.S. Senate to move ahead.

Both sides have predicted an eventual deal to renew the tax cut, which is due to expire at the end of the year.

Aside from the deplorable fact that these legislators can't manage to do their job......Obama AGAIN demonstrates that he knows nothing about our Republic. He is NOT their boss and he does not dictate when they stay in session.

He can suggest all he likes, the president does not run congress. What an egotist. If Boner acquiesces he should be fired.

I don't think he has the power to order that. If I was a congress critter, I'd tell him to pound sand and make a rude gesture.

Not unlike my current behavior, as a serf.

No holiday for legislators without tax cut welfare handout to people who don't earn enough to pay taxes anyway.

Fixed it...

Obama is betting on the masses of folks who want their “Obama money” not knowing how Washington works. I guarantee you there will be people voting for him next year who, if asked, will say one thing they like about him is “He kept those Republicans in Washington last year and would let them go home unless they gave us a tax cut.”

Come on people, look sharp!

“Article 2, Section. 3. ... he may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper...”

No, we wouldn’t consider it an “extraordinary Occasion” by any means but the decision as to that is up to congress and Dems and RINOs control enough of it to force submission.

The House could possibly adjourn anyway, it would do the Rep Party good to do so, but they can’t see it.

You mean Zero would miss out on a Hawaiian vakay with Mitch?

Maybe his perpetual reelection campaign could auction off a Christmas vakay with Mitch, since he won’t be able to go -

They could start asking for a $3 donation, ‘or whatever amount you feel comfortable with’ as the email read, requesting donations for a chance at an exciting Dinner with Zero and Mitch.

I’d bid 50 cents, as long as I can take a separate plane and stay on a different island from her largeness.

Rest assured that Obama will still get in 3 or 4 rounds of golf. Probably in Hawaii.

Um, my family benefitted to the tune of about $2k from the payroll tax cut. I would prefer to not have a $2,000 tax increase next year. And, that would be on top of the taxes I already pay, both of the payroll and income varieties.

Meh... That wouldn't keep me from telling him to pound sand and making a rude gesture.

And filing directly with the Supremes to rule on whether this case was extraordinary, or just business as usual.

For the record, 'does not work or play well with others (idiots)' goes back into the '60s in my record. ;)

I’m glad you pointed that out.

This is a rarely exercised power.

According to wikipedia, the last time this power was exercised was in 1948, when President Harry S. Truman called a special session of Congress.

President Truman planned to campaign for reelection against the “Do-Nothing 80th Congress,” so he called these sessions to embarrass the Republican majorities by accusing them of not acting on important social matters.

Rush Limbaugh has noted that Obama is modelling his campaign on the Truman campaign.

This may be more significant than I thought.
