Romney to air Iowa ad, signaling play for caucuses (Christie to campaign for Romney in Iowa)

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Shifting his Iowa campaign into a more aggressive final phase, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is launching his first TV ads in the state with a spot in which he declares, "I've learned something about how it is that economies grow."

"The right answer for America is to stop the growth of the federal government and to start the growth of the private sector," Romney says in the 30-second spot set to run Friday.

The former Massachusetts governor's decision to start spending money on paid advertising in Iowa five weeks before the Jan. 3 caucuses signals a belief that he can fare well in Iowa even though the state tripped up his 2008 bid.

The move comes as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has emerged as the chief GOP challenger to Romney nationally and in Iowa.

*snip*

In addition to accepting invitations to Iowa's Dec. 10 and 15 debates, Romney also dispatched his son Josh to Iowa and is sending New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to campaign in the state next week.

While a segment of Iowa's influential social conservatives grew wary of Romney's changed positions on social issues four years ago, he has quietly reached out this time to business and fiscal conservatives, forming coalitions with chambers of commerce members and the state's booming agribusiness community.

Romney getting worried. Old strategy not looking so good now. With the dynamics looking different now in NH, SC, and FL, guess he's decided he can't afford to blow-off Iowa anymore.

What good it does him to send another east coast blue state Governor to Iowa is yet to be seen.

As I understand it, Romney shot the Iowa ad in Iowa almost a month ago, before the dynamics started changing. iirc, his campaign said he was planning a late aggressive Iowa effort all along.

And Ann Coulter loves the guy. She is so in love with him she makes me sick; can’t hardly watch, or listen to, her when she gets starry-eyed and starts talking about Christie.

So is this considered a second tour of duty for his son Josh?

After all, Romney in 2007 defended his five sons’ decision not to enlist in the military, saying they’re showing their support for the country by “helping me get elected.”

Now that’s patriotism. Or was that just more weasel talk?

Christie made the right pick. In a choice between Newt or Romney, I’d take Romney.

IF Christie campaigns for Mitt, Christie loses me forever.

I won’t vote for Mitt.

Christie has a longer future in politics. He would be wise not to hamper any future efforts by supporting Mitt.

Mitt has avoided interviews on the talking head shows for over 2 years. When he does one show on Fox, he whines that the host was ‘too aggressive’ in his questions.

Mitt——what kinds of questions do you think you will get as President? How will other world leaders talk to you? If you are that thin-skinned, they will roast you. IF you cannot stand the heat, Mitt, get out of the kitchen.

Do you need some cheese with that whine, Mitt?????

I would too, as I think Newt has too much baggage and his Washington insider label.

But I would have preferred Cain. It’s too bad the way he was singled out and destroyed. They just can’t stand a black conservative man gaining traction, it destroys their deception model of race and class warfare. They did the same thing to Justice Thomas, for the same reasons.

I never took Cain seriously. He isn’t ready for the Oval Office. And his 9-9-9 plan is absolute toxic sludge. He’s just been a waste of time and put off the real decision.

I know he has baggage too, but still, I would have loved to see a black conservative with real conservative credentials just stick it to the liberal establishment.

I know that’s not the best reason for voting for someone, but it sure would have been a nice side benefit.

My dream is to see Rassmussen come out with a poll of GOP likely voters that looks like this:

Romney: 2%

Gingrich: 2%

Cain: 2%

Paul: 2%

Bachmann: 2%

None of the Above: 90%

Something that would really send a chill down their spines. Tough customers. But it'll never happen. People would much rather "be positive."
