This is unfortunate. But if these two were Muslims, they really were incapable of non-Islamic citizenship. In the eyes of all Muslims, Muslims are citizens of the Umma first - the community of Muslims. And THAT, if indeed they are Muslim as I suspect, is the reason for the attack and their deaths.
Mark them up as two more victims of the mad maniac prophet from Arabia - Moham-Mad.
