The Super Committee Failed The Day It Was Created
Red State ^ | 11/22/2011 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 11/22/2011 6:37:45 AM PST by IbJensen

The Super Committee has failed to find a way to trim $1.2 trillion from the deficit. The fact is, though, the Super Committee was a failure from the moment it was conceived. Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, could not control itself. So it punted its failures to a Super Committee and even the threat of massive defense cuts could not prompt Congress to kick its spending addiction.

Now, some members of Congress are even saying “to hell with the defense cuts. We’ll stop those cuts.” Of course.

But it was all a bunch of smoke and mirrors for one simple reason.

We’re going to add ten trillion dollars over the next ten years and all this committee was supposed to do was find $1.2 trillion to trim over the same ten years, i.e. a hundred billion dollars in cuts a year to a trillion dollars in deficits a year.

The math never added up. The Super Committee and the elaborate theater that preceded it were just a bipartisan way to cover up the fact that both Democrats and Republicans have screwed the country out of its life savings while they’ve been funding their pet projects from bridges to nowhere to solar panel firms.

And this all leads to a calamitous dirty little not so secret that the Democrats have no answer for. If Republicans, who were willing to raise taxes on the Super Committee by the way, gave the Democrats their ultimate dream — taking 100% of all dollars earned from every single person who makes $200,000.00 a year or more — we still wouldn’t close Barack Obama’s budget deficit. There’d still be a gap.

That leads us in two directions no one in Washington wants to go. Either start raising taxes on the middle class or start cutting significantly from the federal budget.

Because no one in Washington outside of the real conservatives are willing to do either, the Super Committee, the Budget Control Act, and every statement to every reporter by every leader of either party is all smoke and mir

I don’t understand how it could fail, John Kerry was on this committee.

Erickson is right. It was designed to fail.

Exactly. The irony is Boehner thought he was getting something by giving Obama a pass on taking responsibility for the debt by allowing democrats to avoid having to confront raising the debt ceiling until after the election. So he bought the deal to give both parties a pass on facing the debt ceiling problem until after the election, and now Obama and the democrats are hanging the failure of this committee around Republican’s neck. Bachmann had it right; the ceiling should never have been raised and let it hit the fan at that. When the debt ceiling had to be raised, the Republicans had leverage. Once they passed on that, it was the democrats ball. Game over. Boehner lost.

The committee was set up so it could not fail. They were tasked with slashing only $1.2 trillion, but since they couldn’t do that automatic cuts go into effect cutting, you guessed it, $1.2 trillion.

failed??? Why, it succeeded beyond the RATs wildest dreams. Fit right into their campaign strategy. Note how they all had statements and the best the pubbies could do was a couple of lame sound bites? Republican “leadership”? Don’t make me (or them) cry.

"The committee was set up so it could not fail."

The term: "fail" does not apply here.

The Stupid Committee was merely another distraction designed to divert your attention from reality. Furthermore, the "cuts" that were built into the enabling rules are not even cuts at all, simply a decrease in the rate of growth.

It was all designed from the outset to come to the conslusion that it did. There was never any real task, other than to stall and give democrats an electoral advantage.

Of course the Republicrats on the phony committee could have bent over and allowed the Demorats to have their way. But then wasn’t that what they were doing?

Now Ubama can campaign against the do-nothing party of "no."

Which was the plan all along.

It was never supposed to succeed. The objective was to cut defense. The defense dept is abhorrent to the limps.

We are so boned...

” - - - The fact is, though, the Super Committee was a failure from the moment it was conceived. “

Not so. The purpose of the Super Committee was to provide Lame Duck Obama with a campaign issue, namely a “do-nothing-Congress.”

Thus, the SC was a huge success!

It was also a huge success in that the RINOS did NOT agree to their usual Bipartisan Cave-In.

RINOS 1, Bolsheviks 0.

Hopefully, this is the beginning of the dismantling of Obamanation!

I think my congressman would argue it was intended by the DemocRATS to fail so Obama could blame a “do nothing congress” even before it became law. He spoke at my county Republican club last night, and he had nothing but disdain for Obama’s “Democratic minions in the Senate” who are deliberately sabotaging the budget process.

Bingo. That is all it EVER was supposed to do as the communists never intended to cut a damn thing.

They had a ok deal two weeks ago and the commie honchos killed it.

What the pubs need to do is formulate a plan to defund EPA and Dept. of "Education." Present it and then just sit tight. No deal? No CR's, no money of any kind and get in front of the cameras EVERY DAY and repeat the facts.

"Take the deal or DC starves."

Then the pubs can state over and over the donks are refusing and the "SS and welfare checks will not go out."

Repeat, repeat, repeat.

The only other way out for the commies?

Pass. A. Budget.

.
