Herman Cain, Rick Santorum Tear Up at Iowa Presidential Forum

DES MOINES, Iowa — A gathering of religious conservatives in Iowa tonight turned into one of the most emotional moments of the 2012 primary season when two presidential candidates — Herman Cain and Rick Santorum — both fought back tears while telling personal stories about the most challenging moments in their lives.

Cain, whose wife, Gloria, was in the audience, spoke about being diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer in 2006, stopping several times during his re-telling of the story to compose himself.

“I can do this,” Cain said he told his wife moments after getting the cancer diagnosis from his doctor. “She said — ‘we.’”

Fellow candidate Rick Perry, who was seated next to Cain at the forum, which is sponsored by the Christian conservative organization The Family Leader, reached over and touched Cain on the shoulder, consoling him.

Santorum spoke about his three-year-old daughter Bella’s diagnosis with Trisomy 18, a disorder that kills roughly 90 percent of children before or during birth. He shared his struggle dealing with the illness, acknowledging that he thought if he did not love her, it wouldn’t hurt him if she died.

Bella is still alive, but Santorum spoke of a particularly trying time when he thought he was about to lose her: “I prayed that moment, please, please let her live,” Santorum said. “I’ll do everything to commit to her and not just her, but to every child like her.”

Michele Bachmann and Perry both reached out to comfort the former Pennsylvania senator.

Cain's story was especially heart wrenching, it's a shame the media basically ignored this amazing debate, and it's notable that the two non-christians (Romney and Huntsman) choose not to attend a forum that would of exposed them for the cultist followers that they are.

UNtil I read it, I thought this said “Cain and Santorum TEAR IT UP” (as in rip it up)...

tear up - as in Mr. Speaker...

I find nothing charming or touching about the next leader of the free world gushing tears on national TV. I suspect our moose limb friends find it amusing, though.

The fact that Santorum practices what he preaches should excite all FReepers. Conservatism is a way of life, not a campaign slogan.

Video: Watch the full Iowa Thanksgiving Family Forum
Saturday afternoon, six GOP candidates participated in the Thanksgiving Family Forum which focused primarily on social issues surrounding the 2012 election. The forum was sponsored by The Family Leader and took place at the First Federated Church in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman were also invited, however, both declined to attend.

Original Event Date: Saturday, November 19, 2011

Participants: Bachmann, Cain, Gingrich, Paul, Perry, Santorum

Here is the entire video of the forum, moderated by pollster Frank Luntz. The actual candidate forum begins at about 30 minutes in if you jump ahead.

[The first 4 and a half minutes is a Christian song video. The song is good and the photographs will touch you]

I find these group therapy sessions embarrassing. Man up, Pubs, none of this PC psychobabble and tell all and then a crying jag public display. I think of my Dad, who would never, ever have done such a public display of angst. Goes to show how far gone our society is with this PC garbage. Geez, ....

I agree and commend you for speaking out on this.

These people need to stow the tears.

Life is tough - tougher for some than others.

But we need a leader who can love and care for people yet have the strength to compartmentalize it and man up to the challenges of the day without bawling his head off.

“I find nothing charming or touching about the next leader of the free world gushing tears on national TV.”

They had good reason to tear up, facing such tough obstacles, and they faced those obstacles like REAL men would.

I like Rick Santorum a lot. But the last I looked he was polling lower than Huntsman. Shame.

They were NOT gushing tears. I suggest you watch the THANKSGIVING FORUM and then you may understand why there were some emotions felt.

I will stick with him till he gives up. Who knew Newt would be a front runner? This thing is so volatile and a lot of people on the ground in IA say that Rick is running an old school door to door campaign and has a great network there. If he can roll out of there with a win, other states may take notice. A long shot, but worth the faith in him in my opinion.

I disagree completely. There are many life circumstances worthy of the strongest man’s tears.
The depth of personal understanding displayed particularly by Santorum is motivating me to take a harder look at him as my choice.

I agree. We are witnessing the wussification of America, from all the colored ribbon campaigns (pro athletes wearing pink, no less!), to adults boo-hooing on stage, to football players holding hands when they walk onto the field, to men passively cringing while a crazed shooter picks them off one by one. What a strange world we live in now.

These people need to stow the tears.

Some people are just more prone to cry than others. Otto von Bismarck was well known as a blubberer. He was also a political genius.

Choking up is one thing. They had tears streaming down their faces like baby dolls. It was enough to make a grown man cry.

I just don’t understand why we keep going to everyone else than Rick Santorum, who is a solid conservative with good legislature experience. So what, he lost an election in 2006, when every damn democrat was winning !Yes, he supported Arlen Specter ! So, Sarah Palin supported John McCain for senate in 2010 ! Atleast, we know everything about him. Think about the evangelical support that will turn out for Rick santorum !
