Number 1 seems to make a lot of sense to me. I can see some truth in number 2 but it is basically wrong.
I remember something Socrates is quoted as saying, and this is not his exact words, but he had been criticized for constantly looking around him and staring at people. He said that is the only reason he survived some battle when a lot of Athenians were killed because they were simply running away.
I think me meant basically be on the lookout or always be aware of what is going on around you.
There really are times when running away is the best idea and other times when you should stand your ground, just don’t ask me exactly what those are.
Also as much as possible, be armed.
It seems that in many of the recent attack situations (large packs of feral yutes), running is probably the best option. Of course, that isn’t much of an option when you’re on a crowded bus or subway. Yeah, it sucks that people have to deal with these attacks. But the thugs know it and use it to their advantage, which is why they attack in groups. A lone victim is easy pickins.
