Editor's note: Martin Luther King III is president and chief executive officer of The King Center in Atlanta. Richard Trumka is president of the AFL-CIO.
(CNN) -- It is one of the painful ironies of our time that in the same season Martin Luther King Jr.'s memory is finally honored with a memorial in our nation's capital, the state where he began to lead the civil rights movement is once more the center of an ugly conflict over racial injustice.
The passage of Alabama's anti-immigrant legislation, HB 56, invokes inhumanity reminiscent of the Jim Crow South. And the police state it has created is equally cruel.

take it from Dems, they’re the experts.
Richard Trumka? Seriously?! Hahahahahaha!
“ugly conflict over racial injustice”
I thought it was about being in the country legally or illegally - what does race have to do with it.
So it is ok to be in the U.S. illegally because that is what MLK would have wanted?
What does race have to do with it?
Well for one thing cxalling it a racial problem automatically places 17% of the people in this country on the side of the illegals. Obama’s people.
There is no way we can grant amnesty until we stop illegals from walking in over our borders.
Amnesty has been granted before and if we do not close our borders to illegals it will have to be granted again and again.
Do we need fruits pickers? Perhaps we do but, we need them to go home when the picking is done.
Todays idea of farmers paying them under the table when they are working and government funding them when they aren’t isn’t working. Leave the kids home and come to work.
We cannot afford to educate every illegal kid who comes into the country while their parents come to work.
It all sounds good and a nice thing to do, but it is breaking us.
I have no idea, but I'm not as smart as Martin Luther King III and Richard Trumka.
Crock of bs, the courts have already said these laws are legal. http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getcase.pl?court=us&vol=424&invol=351
No es Jaime Cuervo!
Either illegal stuff is OK for everybody, or we have racist law enforcement.
Got Hyperbole?
Wow! You can sure tell that he’s writing that opinion piece to appeal to the “least common denominator.” Or, were blacks “illegal aliens” too?

“Martin Luther King III and Richard Trumka”
That’s where I stopped.
