Speaking of oppression, we had a chance to spend a month in West Germany in 1986. The town we were in was located very near the border with East Germany. The frau who owned the gasthaus we stayed at took us for a wagon ride up on a hill that overlooked no-man’s land, complete with guard towers, guys with machine guns and dogs, razor wire, floodlights, and minefield. All of which were there to keep people in, not out. I’ve got a pic of it I like to take out when some dumba$$ tells me how wonderful communism is or that we live in a police state. That one pic speaks louder than any words I could utter.
