Gabrielle Giffords wants to feel ‘better’ before returning to D.C.

— Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, in her first public interview since she was shot in the head in Tucson last winter, doted on her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, and called him “brave, brave, brave” as she kissed his bald head.

Giffords appears on ABC’s “20/20” show Monday night. It’s her first extended interview since the January rampage that killed six people and wounded 13.

A segment that aired on “Good Morning America” shows a thin Giffords with a broad grin as she talks about Kelly. Her husband replied that the word “brave” was the same one that came to his mind when he thinks of her — “brave and tough,” he said. Then Giffords, looking directly at Kelly, responds almost in a whisper: “Tough, tough, tough.”

It wasn’t clear from the clip beyond those few words just how fully recovered Giffords is 10 months after the shooting. Interviewer Diane Sawyer recounted how Giffords would discuss her career plans and her recovery, and the segment included some video of Giffords’ progress, from being unable to speak at all, to the point where she was ready to give a television interview.

At one point, Giffords breaks down sobbing while having difficulty relearning to speak and she and her therapist hug. In another clip, she sings into a microphone as part of her speech therapy. And in another she walks holding hands with her husband.

The television interview comes as fellow victims of the shooting came to Washington to testify in favor of a gun-control bill. They said that Giffords’ appearance represents a major milestone for them as it helps them cope with the trauma they’ve endured over the past 10 months. About a dozen survivors and family members are in Washington lobbying for legislation that would extend criminal background checks to

she'll be back to DC soon, equipped with a 'grunt/drool' button to record her votes...

WOW, i think that mightve been a bit harsh...

eff the commie bee-atch...just another commie foorsoldier willing to fight to the end, like fat-dead-ted...

the whole lot of em remind me of longshanks in Braveheart...to the dying breath, hopin to see the fruits of their lifelong pursuit of evil...

maybe her and jim brady can go on the road and do a duet, between the two, i think theve still got half a brain...

dang, another mean comment??? ask me if i care about either one of their feeeelings as they work tirelessly to kill me...???

I’ve heard that some are trying to get her to run for the Open Senate Seat in 2012! They know people aren’t going to have the guts to vote against Giffords....Sadly she will probably sail to a win for any office she runs for on Sympathy! Then it’s Gabby for President...

Strom Thurmond was a Republican. But there was another Democratic senator from a Northwestern state that had a stroke I believe and stayed on in the Senate.

“... When I clicked on this thread, I was ready to criticize anyone making a political point at her expense...”

No offense, Cringe, but I don’t understand why you would...

She’s going to do exactly what she would have done had she NOT been shot - ironically, by a Liberal Poster Child Protege. Loughner was one of THEIRS - a PERFECT example of what happens when you absorb liberal BS all your life.

This isn’t a game. It’s for the survival of the country, ultimately, and sentimentality or “compassion” for the enemy only gets them further ahead in their agenda.

I don’t mourn, nor eulogize, nor have compassion for the other side. They would dance on our graves in a heartbeat.

And I seriously don’t give a rat’s ass about “sinking to their level” - THEY’RE WINNING. They’ve BEEN winning for decades because THEY don’t give a rat’s ass about how they fight. They fight to destroy us, period.

I took a beating on another thread some thread some months back over comments I made regarding some “well-liked” Canadian socialist that took the dirt nap. My comment was “No loss. One less socialist”. You wouldn’t believe the hatemail I got for that. Mod deleted my comment, but I still hold to it.

Not going to pretend these people are anything other than exactly what they are - either hardcore die-hard socialist/communists or Useful Idiots, and every one of them aiming a dagger at our back.

In Gifford’s case, she’s DOUBLY useful now - a Poster Child Victim that’s also a Legislator that will rubber stamp anything they want her to, especially if it’s against to our gun rights.

Sarah Brady is another perfect example. Trotting her wheelchair bound husband out and screaming “See!!! See!!! THIS is what happens because people have guns!!!”

That they are so sleazy should not surprise you, or anyone. These are the “bloody shirt” moments they LIVE for.

They’ll dance in the blood of murdered people and use it to justify more eventual murder, ultimately.

She should have resigned. The people of her district have been unrepresented since the shooting.

The seats still haven’t been redrawn yet to my knowledge.

GOP-controlled AZ unfortunately does it by independent commission. Gov Brewer removed the chairwoman. They have a draft map, I’ve read Republicans don’t like it. The courts will likely decide things.

The situation with Giffords miffs me. She should have resigned.

If she is reelected due to sympathy that would be unfortunate. But if she continued to not show up to work and vote to screw her constituents that would nice. Better a democrat that doesn’t vote than any other democrat.

I’m glad that Giffords is healing and we all wish her a full and complete recovery. She still ought to resign and let her constituants have a full-time representative.

“The situation with Giffords miffs me. She should have resigned.”

If she was a GOP, there would have been an “outcry” for her to do so, bet the farm on it.

No doubt that the deomcrats will put extreme pressure on Ms. Giffords and her husband astronaut Kelley to get her to run again for congress in ‘12.

If she can't speak how can she campaign? Should be interesting.

Thx! I heard something this morning about Giffords’ husband jumping ugly on Boehner. I’ve got a question for Kelly: Why the heck didn’t you make certain your wife had police protection at her appearances? You never thought to ask, make an issue? People in glass houses, bud.

Was just listening to a couple talk radio hosts speaking about this.

I think Dems won’t be able to roll people over about Giffords.

From the sound of things, Dems are trying to prevent her actual condition from becoming apparent. Her fitness for the office.

Her staff seems to be telling people, what Giffords would say if she could.

It’s a moment for the GOP. The issue of her fitness for the office is a legimate concern.

It is not “Giffords” seat.

It is the people’s seat.
