Newt Gingrich is no conservative
Washington Examiner ^ | 111411 | Gene Healy

Has it really come to this? Newt Gingrich as the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney? That's what many in the punditocracy have proclaimed as the former speaker of the House has surged recently in the polls.

Yet a look at his record reveals that Newt is hardly the "anti-Mitt" -- he's Mitt Romney with more baggage and bolder hand gestures.

Every Gingrich profile proclaims that he's a dazzling "ideas man," a "one-man think tank." It seems that, if you clamor long enough about "big ideas," people become convinced you actually have them.

But most of Gingrich's policy ideas over the last decade have been tepidly conventional and consistent with the Big Government, Beltway Consensus.

Gingrich's campaign nearly imploded this summer when he dismissed Rep. Paul Ryan's, R-Wis., Medicare reform plan as "right-wing social engineering." But that gaffe was a window into Gingrich's irresponsible approach toward entitlements.

In 2003, Gingrich stumped hard for President George W. Bush's prescription drug bill, which has added about $17 trillion to Medicare's unfunded liabilities. "Every conservative member of Congress should vote for this Medicare bill," Newt urged.

And in his 2008 book "Real Change," he endorsed an individual mandate for health insurance.

All you have to worry about is:

Is Newt more conservative than Mitt or Barack?

Everything else is wishing!

The circular firing squad is getting smaller and smaller and its time to put down the weapons.

So give it a rest, OK?

Amen to that.

The evil one in our White House is going to get another term if we’re not careful.

Get up to date....

And ask too, can Romney stand nose-to-nose with Obama and shoot down the unconstitutional and economically disastrous parts of Obamacare? Remember, Romneycare is 50% paid for by federal tax money. He does not mention that EVER unless a good reporter corners him with it.

I’d take Newt over Romney or Obama. Let’s just hope it doesn’t come to that.

Oh, we can vote for somebody else rather than Newt or Mitt.

What we have to worry about is: who that might be.

The Cain Cult is still out to destroy anyone who isn’t Herman Cain.

Expect them, like many PaulBots, to take their toys and go home if someone else is nominated.

The “Everyone is scum but Herman Cain” assault continues. Enjoy the ride. Cain fumbles the ball every day; they gotta dig into prior seasons to find Newt’s turnovers.

In any election, it's always going to be a two-on-one fight - the Republican nominee vs. the Democratic nominee and the MSM. One thing that I really like about Newt is his adversarial position towards the media. He realizes that they are his enemy and he will acknowledge and fight their attacks. Where GWB and most Republicans face their Democratic nominee and get pummelled in the back of the head by the MSM without turning aroung to punch the MSM, Newt will turn around and b-slap the MSM to the floor.

He is quite far from perfect, but he will take on both heads of the two-headed hydra.

Newt is the conservative left in the race with the best chance of beating Obama.

He may not be the best conservative or the most conservative but he is the only one that can win..

Sen Rick is pretty close to a classic social conservative.

Not a tea party conservative, but a social conservative.

Sen Rick is one of the few who did go out on a limb, and took hits from the leftists, for standing with the conservatives on social issues. He deserves at least some respect for doing that.

Why has Sen Rick not gotten to be flavor of the week or month?

The media did not like to hear “man on dog”. We could say that it’s tough luck, that we can’t get a tea party conservative. But a Social Conservative would be better than a pure RINO.

We could say that.

Heck, what about Buddy Roemer, what about Gary Johnson?

I certainly do want everyone to be reminded exactly why Newt Gingrich was not the front runner from the beginning. There is a lot of record that needs to be freshly reexamined.
