A Los Angeles city fire captain is on leave after for allegedly falsifying his timecard after auditors found he was paid $50,000 in vacation time last year, according to a report Wednesday.
Capt. Eric Vasquez was paid nearly $77,000 above his base salary of $108,000 the equivalent of nearly 23 weeks of pay in vacation, overtime and bonus pay, according to payroll information obtained by the Daily News under the California Public Records Act.
The alleged falsification by Vasquez, a 17-year LAFD veteran whose duties involved supervising time sheet data entry including his own were discovered last month by the City Controllers Office when the department submitted payroll data electronically for the first time, the Daily News reported.
Until October, the LAFD was the only city agency still handling time sheets manually, which the Controllers Office had flagged as a risk in an audit in February.
Vasquez was placed on administrative leave and his computer and other documentation were confiscated, the Daily News reported.
City officials could not immediately say if he was continuing to receive his salary while on leave.
Records show that Vasquez charged the city for 919 hours of vacation in 2010, or the equivalent of nearly 23 weeks, for pay of $50,501, the Daily News reported.

He was only claiming 23 weeks of vacation? No wonder they didn’t catch him before.
No, ...... ya don’t say!
Not everyone working a hook and ladder is the same as the ones in NYC on 9/11.

Public Employee Unions are more inimical to our Republic than even Chi-Com imports.
Prediction - he’ll probably be asked to retire (with his mega-pension intact), will quickly be hired by another government agency, and hence forth will keep his level of cheating below the radar like everyone else.
“Not everyone working a hook and ladder is the same as the ones in NYC on 9/11.”
A big bump to that.
You’re likely right and if they did try and strip his pension which should be the automatic next step some judge probably reinstates it and fines the city for having such audacity.
He should move to Ohio now.
Every document this guy signed needs scrutiny----L/E knows when one felony surfaces, other felonies have been committed.
Vacation pay is given as a condition of employment----it is not intended to be collected as a retirement lump sum.
L/E should also check and see if this guy is collecting other govt checks----UI, disability, other govt jobs, etc.
Here in St. Louis County, the “brave” pension accumulators were paid overtime and in some cases “double overtime” for showing parents how to use infant child car seats.
Age 50 something, “retiring” Fire Captains walk away with 750K pensions of which they “contributed” a pittance over their careers.
23 weeks of vacation? Who does he think he is, Michelle?
If there is no price to pay for outright theft of taxpayer money, we can expect hundreds more criminals engaging in this behavior by "public employees."
