Around here, the Jaycees and Boy Scouts set up Christmas tree lots for fund-raising. I suppose a federal tax like this will put them out of business due to the additional regulations and paperwork involved in collecting the tax.

They have done everything they can possibly do to take Christmas out of Christmas, now they want to tax a tree for being called a Christmas Tree.

Sell them as firewood.

I just walk out back behind the cabin and cut one down, now I got to apply that concept somehow to all the other taxes I pay.

All governments do this sort of thing. There once was a community that had too many fortune tellers so they likewise put in a special tax. It was the first Excess Prophets Tax.

The good news is the FEDERAL GVERNMENT called them Christmas Trees!

Now at all those public “holiday tree events” we Christians need to make placards proclaiming “This CHRISTMAS TREE participated in the US Government CHRISTMAS TREE tax program”

More of how Barry is helpin’ po folks? Is the tax 45% for CEO’s of aircraft manufacturers?

What’s the additional per ornament surcharge? Or the hazardous EPA regs on disposal of those foil icicles? When is the mandate for LED vs. incandescent (with mandatory jail term)?

Idiots, all of them. They need to go home January, 2013.

Notice that this is the only story I’ve seen where the fedgov calls a “Christmas tree” properly a “Christmas” tree - not a holiday tree.

1. Will a “holiday tree” not be subject to the jizya?

2. Is this not a tax on religion if it’s just on “Christmas” trees?

The only time I hear them actually refer to it as a Christmas tree it’s so they can tax it. Friggin muslim.

Clever idea. Meanwhile, I have seen nothing about the collection mechanism. While I imagine the Dept. of Ag. can set up various boards, why is this not just part of their existing budget?

Is a depart allowed to create a new tax or does that lie only within the congress?

What if the military decided ti create a 50% protection tax?

I don’t see anything constitutional about this.

This type of assessment on ag producers is fairly common and is voted on by the producers themselves. The Christmas Tree Assocaition started pursuing this in 2008 as live tree sales declined. The funds are used for promotion, education and research. For example, Reagan’s milk tax of $0.15 per cwt of milk sold funds the “Got Milk” program. Reagan’s pork tax of $40 per $100 of value funds the “Pork. The other white meat” campaign. And Reagan’s beef tax of $1 per head funds the “Beef. It’s whats for dinner” campaign.

Wonder why the Fortune Tellers didn’t see THAT one coming and relocated.

As GB said this morning, this is nothing but a tax, on Christians illegal per se. I assume the ACLJ will file a lawsuit (heaven knows the ACLU won’t!)

Isn't there a 1st amendment problem here?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof

A Christmas tree is specificly a religious symbol. Wouldn't a tax on a specific religious item been seen as a method the governmnt could use to prohibit the free exercise of religion?
