Unfortunately such sentences like this aren’t uncommon in Australian courts. Generally the officially available penalty is much higher (my guess is 20 years on these types of charges) but Judges have to consider a prisoner’s record, what other sentences have been imposed, etc, and very few get anywhere near the maximum. 8 years for this type of crime, isn’t an uncommon sentence.
People blames the Judges, but it’s often not their fault - they have to follow the guidelines. If they are ‘too harsh’ according to the guidelines, they can open avenues for appeal.
So in about 5 years he’ll do this to another child. Sad.
