Presumed consent organ donation to be Welsh law by 2015

The Welsh government says it plans to have a new law in place for presumed consent of organ donation by 2015.

The legislation would require people to opt out of donating their organs when they die, rather than opting in by signing the donor register.

A White Paper setting out a timetable is set to be published this week.

Opponents say they do not believe it will work and it will hit trust in the system but supporters claim it will save more lives.

The Welsh government has told the BBC Wales Politics Show that it is planning a system of "soft" presumed consent where family members would still be consulted after a person's death.

A spokesperson said: "We believe we should be progressive on this issue and follow the example of those countries with excellent records on organ donation, where an opt-out system is a key element.

A quote from the article, “One of the real problems I’ve got with presumed consent is that it undermines trust”. Gee, ya think?!

If you haven’t done so, read “Jigsaw Man” by Larry Niven.

Especially if you don’t have to be dead to donate......

This is actually the norm in many European countries. Not saying I agree with it (I don’t), but the UK has been the exception, rather than the rule, with the “opt-in” approach the U.S. has.

One wonders, though, if *mandatory* organ donation will someday be proposed by one group or another in the name of the “greater good.”

“... if mandatory organ donation will someday be proposed ..”

That’s what I wonder as well. Boiling the frog method, IMHO. First, there can be an opt in and then a mandatory for the “greater good”.

Of course it will if the Leftist/Socialists remain in power. And do ya think they will check your voter ID before deciding you WILL donate when they want you? A ‘not quite dead’ Republican? Close enough to donate. Obamacare is far more Leftist than the NHS in Britain.

Nazi doctors conducted experiments on concentration-camp inmates without the consent of the victims, who suffered indescribable pain, mutilation, permanent disability, or in many cases death as a result. At the Nuremberg “doctor’s trial,” prosecutors found doctors guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity;

Socialism - no longer content to take your property; now they want your body parts. Soon, they will be too impatient to wait ‘til your dead.

Exactly the real issue. I believe that which makes me an individual lives on in Christ and it doesn't matter what happens to my body once I'm gone (parts is parts), but I would sure hate for my life to be cut deliberately short so someone else could take the parts....

Thanks, I was just going to look up the title. I read that YEARS ago as futuristic Sci-Fi. Then the Chinese came out and started "harvesting" organs of convicted criminals and the hair on the back of my neck stood up as to how prophetic the story was.

For those who are interested, a recap is HERE.
