Is "Black Bloc" hijacking Occupy Oakland?
By John Blackstone

(CBS News) Peaceful protests by the Occupy Oakland movement were overshadowed this week by violent clashes between a small group of demonstrators and police. Now there's concern among the majority of protesters that their message is being hijacked. CBS News correspondent John Blackstone looks into this latest development.

It could be seen as a battle for the image of the Occupy movement. One demonstrator struggles to put out the flames of a burning barricade as others masked and dressed in black pull him away.

It wasn't the only time during a huge Occupy demonstration in Oakland this week that protesters found themselves on opposite sides. When dozens of black clad marchers began attacking a supermarket, others urged them to stop -- finally linking arms to protect the store from further destruction.

One demonstrator, Sheik Anderson, distanced most of the protesters from the violence.

"We called the mayor's office the moment we understood what was going on over there," said Anderson. "That was an anonymous action, that was nothing to do with Occupy Oakland.

To many demonstrators, a sinister mask, fashioned on Guy Fawkes, the revolutionary who attempted to blow up the British Parliament buildings more than 400 years ago, has become a worldwide symbol of anarchy and revolution.

No. Moreso, defecating on police cars and urinating in the street “becomes the symbol of protests”.

Don’t forget about child prostitution, public masturbation and widespread drug use.

I laugh at these silly fools with their masks. It’s street theater to them, a performance. They couldn’t care less, and they certainly don’t understand, about the economy.

Geejus, what an opportunity to make a quick fortune!

A person only needs to act quick and buy up these or get a vacuum forming machine and a mold, and then travel around setting up kids to sell these at $20 a pop.

Notice how the media showcases all the non-violent ones and repeats over and over how it’s just a minority. If one Tea Partier... ONE... broke a window, that person would become the Poster Child for the Tea Party.

A few dozen dead men (girls) in masks would quickly solve the problem.

Anarchists have no laws including those that protect them

Baloney. The “V for Vendetta” mask was a favorite to protesters of all stripes from the moment the movie came out. Heck, it was so popular people looked forward to figuring out what they could protest just so they could wear the mask. I’ve seen photos of protesters in Beijing with them. It may be a favorite of Occupiers, but in no way represents them.

“... It may be a favorite of Occupiers, but in no way represents them...”

I saw the movie “V for Vendetta” years ago. Occupiers using this mask is hysterical... they represent the government in that movie... not the Guy Faulk character at all. In fact, Tea Party members wearing that mask would make more sense!

The one I posted was from Moscow.

One of the most foolish phrases in the world:

"It Can't Happen HERE"

It IS happening here (in the USA):

(Cuban-inspired and funded left wing communist Sandinista "turbas" (or street mobs) turning out for "social justice" in the streets of Managua, Nicaragua)

1. Tea party folks aren’t afraid to show their faces
2. I suppose the next step these clowns will take will be to accuse the tea party of being behind the masks and causing the problems just to make them look bad. Like they needed any help.
3. On the “right”, it does matter the company you keep. On the “left”, apparently it doesn’t matter the company you keep.
4. Just shows how stupid these folks are by not “getting” the movie. Comprehension skills= ZERO!

SHEIK ANDERSON: My name is Sheik Anderson, I’m from Oakland, California, and I’m an artist.

I ask him to give me the lay of the land.

ANDERSON: We have a supply tent where we have clothes that are donated, blankets, sleeping bags… We have a school where we have information, we have a media tent and an info tent, we even have a little garden growing, and we have a full kitchen – no one’s hungry...

There’s no one individual that could take responsibility for anything that is done here. Everything is a collective effort.

And that’s not just for practical reasons. Unlike at most political protests, many at Occupy Oakland see this collective effort as fundamental to their aims: a promise of a new way to organize society. You can see it in action around the plaza. Over in the kitchen area, two young men are peeling carrots and potatoes in the prep tent, while two others are serving cooked food at a long table. Jamal Porter shows me around the kitchen area.
