Correct, we shouldn't. But even as early as the 1840’s and 1850’s, in our still young Republic, the railroads were being built thanks to Federal land grants along the right of way.
It would be an interesting debate to decide which lasted longer: the virtues of the Roman Republic or the American Republic.
