This ordinance is only with respect to municipal-owned buildings, Arnett said. Its not like its for the entire city of Watertown and I think that gets glossed over.
I dont think we are taking away Second Amendment rights from anybody, added Alderman Daniel Olejniczak. We are choosing to do what we can do under the law.
During the time for public comment at the beginning of the council meeting, two Water-town residents spoke against the ordinance that bans carrying concealed weapons in city facilities.
I want you to do whats right for the people, Barry Baumann, of 1303 S. Ninth St., said to the council. You shouldnt fear the law-abiding citizens that want to protect themselves. You should fear the criminals. This new law that went into effect today (Nov. 1), a yes vote, opens up areas that the criminals can have their own will because they dont have to fear law-abiding citizens having arms there to protect themselves.
