Brokaw Preaches Virtues Of Simple Life . . . For Others
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

"We need to re-evaluate what is required in our lives, so that we have a sense of satisfaction. What really counts? One friend of mine has reduced it to this: you should get up in the morning and ask 'what do I need,' not just "what do I want?'" -- Tom Brokaw, Morning Joe 11-1-11.

"Of course, one of the reasons I bought it was to be able to get away from the frantic life I lead and to have some privacy." -- Tom Brokaw, explaining his purchase of an interest in a 4,000-acre mountain retreat in Montana.

Tom Brokaw: a Michael Moore kind of millionaire? We haven't seen him getting down with the Occupy kids like the documentary-maker recently did. But there was Brokaw--who has amassed a reported $70 million and owns a 4000-acre "mountain retreat" in Montana--on Morning Joe today preaching the virtues of the simple life . . . for others.

I don’t begrudge Brokaw making his millions and living in luxury. But do we really need him preaching the virtues of the simple life to us? Ping to Today show list.

He’s a doddering old newsreader who doesn’t actually have gravitas, but merely projects the appearance of gravitas. Anyone who takes him seriously is a fool.

I have a problem with anyone who amasses a fortune while promoting marxism.

Really, ‘what do I need?” No one in the US really ‘needs’ anything in the way of basic life necessities, least of all Tom Brokaw.

What about, ‘How would You have me serve You today, Lord?” Now there’s a question that would take old Tommie right out of himself.

71 year old multimillionaire.

Love to see interview question:

Tom, don’t you think you should retire and let some poor journalism grad from Columbia with $100k in student loans make some money?

The liberal elite sees no disconnect with this. The elite is the cream of the crop. They are better than us, and NEED a mountain retreat to recharge their considerable creative powers.

But, the little people need to learn what their lot is in life. All you NEED is some healthy food, (healthy defined by such renowned diet experts as Michelle Obama), a modest 2 or 3 room home, and some hard work!

I can’t tell you how much I hate these people. We’re getting closer and closer to pitch forks and torches.

But you must understand - Brokaw is preaching the virtues of the “simple life” for you and me, not him and his family living the life of luxury behind the tree (or thousands of them, since he has a 4,000 acre ranch in Montana). He and his wife Meredith are supposedly fixtures on the glitzy Manhattan and Hollywood party set, which ain’t cheap either. Its like Algore stoutly defending the public schools where his kids never spent one day.

About 15 years ago I sat across the aisle from him as we flew into Newark. One additional thing I will say about him: he’s taller than you think. That’s the best I can say about the liberal, self-important hack.

He should probably spend his days practicing pronouncing the letter “L”.

I’d like to know why someone who has a job where he reads for 23 minutes a night can amass a $70 million dollar fortune.

It also reminds me of the hundreds of thousands of kids going to college majoring in broadcasting who actually believe they’re going to be the next Tom Brokaw when there are only 3 network anchor positions open at one time. This describes me years ago.

makes me think of Homer Simpson hearing a fire alarm, knocks people down to escape first then jams the exit doors once he's out...

ask 'what do I need,' not just "what do I want?'

That belief is the product of the mind-body dichotomy which states that the pursuit and production of wealth serves only a low order of needs of secondary importance and that concern with its pursuit and production beyond the minimum necessities required for the sustenance of human life is evil, immoral, and sinful by virtue of elevating low material values to the place properly reserved only for the pursuit of noble spiritual values.

But because of the possession of reason, man has an unlimited potential, and the pursuit and possession of wealth is an objective value needed for the actualization of man's potential.
