Michelle Obama to visit Broward to raise money for president's re-election

Michelle Obama makes her first visit as first lady to Broward County this week. She'll be raising money for her husband's re-election effort.

"There's tremendous excitement," said Andrew Weinstein, a Coral Springs lawyer active in Democratic politics. He's a volunteer fundraiser for President Barack Obama's campaign.

"She's an incredibly eloquent speaker. She's passionate," Weinstein said. "The other thing, from what I've seen, that draws people to her is she's candid. And as someone who's closer to the president of the United States than anyone else, she'll share things that maybe he won't."

The event comes the same month that Obama for America, the president's re-election campaign, reported another stellar quarter of political fundraising.

On Thursday, the first lady will attend campaign fundraisers in Jacksonville and Tampa. Later that day she will appear at the Signature Grand in Davie for a dinner and reception.

A general ticket costs $500. For $25,000, someone can become an event co-host, which gets admission to a special reception, two pictures with the first lady, and 10 seats at a front-row table.

There also are some "limited availability" tickets for $100.

Weinstein said he's gotten "great feedback from people who are really looking forward to seeing her."

Broward Democratic Chairman Mitch Ceasar said first ladies "are always more popular than their husbands...
