If there’s one thing that shouldn’t stay in any tax reform, it is exemptions for state and local taxes. Otherwise, the more fiscally responsible and conservative states and populations will be forced to keep subsidizing the higher-tax, spendthrift states and populations.
Oh, and same thing for mortgage deductions, too. Higher taxes in some states also ripple through in higher real estate values—and hence mortgage payments. Time to stop subsidizing that, too.
