SAN ANTONIO - The first Mexican long-haul truck bound for the U.S. interior crossed at the international bridge at Laredo, Texas, Friday, carrying electronic equipment destined for suburban Dallas and fulfilling a controversial provision of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement. Business leaders on both sides of the Rio Grande praised the move while sign-waving Teamsters Union members in Laredo jeered.
NAFTA called for Mexican trucks to be allowed to travel beyond a six- to 25-mile wide "commercial zone" in the United States by December 1995.
However, concerns about the safety of Mexican trucks, the opposition of the Teamsters and other labor unions, and, in recent years, heightened concerns about Mexico's violent drug war and illegal immigration, have repeatedly delayed the provision from taking effect.

How many long haul truckers in Texas will get the axe as a result? It’s not a matter of if, but of how many, because it will happen.
As these truckers come farther into the interior, freight brokers will be lining up to take advantage of their lower trucking rates.
And, while this is a reciprocal program, not many US truckers will take the chance of facing Mexican crime and take their rigs south of the border.
A US trucker would have to be nuts to cross the Mexican border to haul freight.
And that's the half of the story these so called reporters never tell. Any freshman level, real journalism course would give these stories an "F" became they only tell half the story.
They should be interviewing US trucking firms and independents to let us know what Americans truckers plan to do, or not do, and what they actually think of this entire issue. But they don't want to tell that side of the story.

Yup. When I use to haul when I’d get to a boarder town NO ONE wanted to go in to mexico.
While they can’t haul USA to USA freight (like Canada I think they can haul their load anywhere, and get a load headed back to their home country) this will make a impact on US based trucks.
Thankfully we have some good DOT inspectors at our weight stations capable of putting most anyone out of service for something. (Like, can you read and speak English fluently?) Hopefully we have some patriots at those boarder inspection stations. If some of the junk I saw at truck depots from mexico gets on our roads. There will be dead motorists.

This is crap. I saw a Mexican truck with Mexican license plates and no US markings on I 30 in Southwest Arkansas nearly a month ago. I doubt it was the only one.
The major problem with the media is what they leave out... that is the bias.
The first thing that is going to happen is they are going to become the cartel's preferred delivery service.
Once they clear the checkpoints, the cartels will grab their families in Mexico and hold them hostage unless they stop at point X and pick up their drugs. Bank on it.
I think you might be a little confused. This is a Federal program - not a State of Texas program. Therefore, like border enforcement, Gov. Perry has no control over it.
These trucks will be using, trashing and causing accidents on Texas roads. Also, it will cost Texas residents jobs. I wouldn't dare to speak for Gov. Perry - but I don't believe he would be pleased at Texans losing jobs and our safety put at risk.
Gov. Perry is not for 'open borders' as you stated. Border enforcement is the job of the US government. Obviously you are not familiar with the Texas DPS and Ranger interdiction teams.
This program will put a strain on Texas roads, truckers and the DPS. It's a stretch to believe any governor would be for that.

While he gave perameters dont kid youreself on the open border attitude. Then you had better do some homework on his support and efforts to make the TTC (Trans Texas Corridor) a reality. While it was defeated by opposition Perry pledged to keep working on it.
I lived for five years in Texas during his tenure moving out after hurricae Ike. Im quite fmailiar with his record.
