We could then reciprocate by making the first batch of freedom fighters (well, they do fight against freedom) dead, too.

I was wondering if anyone would catch on to that sly bit of innuendo. ;)
The fact is, success (in freeing Shalit) has a 'thousand mothers', while failure is always an orphan (as the saying goes), however from the first day that Shalit was kidnapped, the Israeli government should have quietly informed Asshat in Syria (Assad, a sponsor of Hamas), along with Arafatrat's successor (Abbas), that there would be no refuge or sanctuary for ANY terrorist leaders, and that the Mossad would have a bullseye on them personally until Shalit was returned safely. There could have been additional pressure placed on the terrorist kidnappers if the GWB Administration had informed Abbas and his cohorts that there would be absolutely no contact, no assistance, no acknowledgment, let alone 'recognition' until Shalit was returned, and breaking diplomatic relations with Syria until Shalit was returned would have been a valid tactic, as Syria has always craved international legitimacy, even while serving as a home and a host to all sorts of terrorist organizations. Syria is as much a rogue state as is Iran (and the two are joined at the hip).
While I may not agree with Netanyahu's decision to free terrorists and criminals in exchange for Shalit, I do agree with the concept that one Jew is worth MORE than a thousand of those child-murdering scumbags.
May God deliver Sergeant Major Gilad Shalit.
