1979 was also at the tail end of a long period where people felt economically brutalized. Political opinions tend to radicalize under such conditions. Fortunately Reagan was able to appeal to our better angels of our American nature.
Is there someone on the horizon capable of doing that today? And do we still have enough people in our population willing to listen? We are about to find out.
