On Friday Rick Perry delivers his first major policy address, unveiling an aggressive energy and jobs plan. It will no doubt be good. It will no doubt address serious problems. It will no doubt be ignored.
That's because, unfortunately for Mr. Perry, drilling isn't the energy topic du jour. The buzz is the bankrupt Solyndra, which is why the only energy question that came to Mr. Perry at Tuesday's New Hampshire debate was this: How, exactly, is his state's vaunted "Emerging Technology Fund"—which has dumped some 200 million taxpayer dollars into private companies—any different from Obama programs that subsidized the likes of Solyndra?

Mr. Perry did all this on a grand scale, convincing his legislature to create two investment funds, one being the Emerging Technology Fund, which has acted as state venture capitalist to more than a hundred firms, including green companies. In fairness, he wasn’t alone. Indiana’s Mitch Daniels, Mississippi’s Haley Barbour, Louisiana’s Bobby Jindal—conservatives all—have happily staked their taxpayers’ dollars on green bets.

its funny how the media ignores the obvious; investing in solar energy, etc is not the issue with Solyndra- its the fact the company received a massive, ill advised loan due to the fact an obama bundler was one of the companies biggest investor..but hey- to point that out is racist...

Perhaps, but how many of these restructured the loans to benefit campaign contributors over taxpayers like Obama did? How many gave $500,000,000 to a campaign bundler? How many gave to companies, after the professional staff of the administrative agency had previously decided the company didn’t qualify? How many of these administrations rushed and pressured a decision, just so Joe Biden could have a press conference?
You already made your support of Solyndra type deals clear. No need to keep repeating it.
Funding startups in Green Energy is never a good idea. You pay for the R&D for ECONOMICALLY VIABLE technology; not payoffs to relatives and supporters, because the product is NOT competitive without stealing from Taxpayers.
The loan program that Bush and the Republican congress created in 2005 gave Obama the power to do this.
That Obama’s actions went beyond cronyism and into outright corruption is indisputable IMHO.
The point of the article is that both Perry and Romney indulged in similar cronyism.
The problem isn’t that it wasn’t approved for funding. The problem is how terribly managed these programs are. Lack of accountability and transparency of management and contract compliance from Perry’s office makes his motives highly suspect. Lots of promised jobs by companies taking millions in taxpayer dollars who have failed or are failing to meet their jobs contract obligations with Texas taxpayer ska Solyndra.
dollars not being refunded makes Perry look alot like Obama doing the same thing with federal funds.

Which company are you referring to? There are dozens of companies taking money from the Texas ETF/TEF.
I don’t support Bachmann, she’s just the only one left worth voting for. Cain would be good if he dropped the 999 plan.

Tax breaks and actual loans of tax payer money are NOT the same thing. The article trashes Romney and Perry (and Jindal and Barbour).
If you ever do actually click through and read the article be sure to also read the article that supports Perry’s welfare for illegals stance.
Trust me, the WSJ would be happy with either big government republican, Perry or Romney.
I don’t have a problem with giving tax breaks to attract business to over taxed areas; even though the real solution is lower taxes but when the hell did the government get into the business of venture capitalism? Why are our politicians risking tax dollars to fund any business? What is the reward for taxpayers? Why risk tax dollars? If it is a good business go out and find some private money to take the risk. T is no wonder we pay through the nose but still our parks are dirty, our roads are falling apart and services we use are cut back every year.

IMO the biggest issue with Solyndra is that the loan was restructured so that Obama’s cronies and fund raisers were to be paid off first before the taxpayer should the firm go bankrupt, which it did. It was a bad investment, but the restructuring was worse. DOJ was supposed to approve such a restructuring.
How much did Perry have to do with the windmill scam put over by T. Boone Pickens?
We haven’t heard much about that, recently. But it was a scam from the beginning, intended to give Pickens control of the right-of-way where the transmission lines ran, so he would control the WATER needed by the cities in Texas.
The windmills were never intended to work.
