And anyhow, the current state of the US judicial system would make any such proposal a dead letter.

I wonder why Obama has picked this time to jump on California medpot farms? Debates about whether those farms’ produce are going to all-medical purposes aside, this represents a whole bunch of pot that WON’T be imported from Mexico.

Maybe the border service is keeping mum about how well their ground listening equipment works, but it makes sense to use it if possible where there are situations that invite tunneling.

“have lots of forces strategically placed along the border to respond to and apprehend anyone crossing the Rio Grande.”

Well at least you are more open to the use of fences than Perry who would only permit fencing in some parts of some urban areas. You should drop the analogies to the Maginot Line and the Great Wall of China, they have nothing to do with our circumstances.

Of course there are areas such as canyons and lakes where a fence doesn’t make sense. But the cheap illegal labor advocates grab that as an excuse for doing nothing except for some public relations fencing in some urban areas. We need to start from the mindset of fencing/patrol road on as much of the border as possible, rather than from the opposite mindset of using as little as possible and hoping for the best.

The cry for more boots on the ground is a false choice. Of course we need more boots on the ground together with a barrier to act as a force multipler. The annual cost of a high number of boots on the ground to defend completely open border as a practical matter will not be sustained, whereas we are in a better position to sustain a reasonable annual appropriation of fence maintenance and border personnel after incurring a one-time cost to build a force multipler.

IMO we don’t have the luxury of waiting any more. The Mexican cartels are already ensconcing themselves in the border counties and beyond. Powerful drug cartels like CDS have supplanted the power of the Mexican government in areas of their control. The violence on the Mexican side of the border is out of control and growing, and waiting until it grows on our side into the same level of problem is foolishness. We need to prepare for it now.

I have already read that pdf you supplied and it certainly is not an argument for leaving the border unfenced.

However, thanks for your thoughtful comment rather than simply reciting the “Rick Perry is so awesome” response I have too frequently seen.

I sadly comment that weapons and troops are already positioned in our country to attack...we have been extremely naive about our enemies and politics have allowed our enemy in..we would have to be ignorant to think otherwise..if i were a general for their side I would get everything ready first..Bin laden learned..don’t punch superman in the stomach you need a final blow to start with...or superman will whip up on ya..come Lord...

Don't know if you have ever read any of Tony Hillerman's books but he wrote one that has a very similar senario. The name of it is "The whistling Pig" I believe, something like that, has been a while since I read it.

It is about drug smugglers using an old oil line to smuggle dope into the country using the cleaning pigs to send the stuff across the border. Also I have seen several old movies where something similar went down in relation to bank robberies.

An enterprising intelligent leader of these vicious jerks probably picked up on things like that and came up with his own version.
