Devastating ad. But so will be “Heartless”, etc. Citizen Cain benefits from the Perry-Romney M.A.D. assault.

Another bulleye!! I knew the instant Mitt said “there’s a lot of reasons not to elect me” in the debate that that line would make it’s way into a campaign ad.

Perry needs to give his “ad makers” a raise. They just keep getting better.

Devastating ad. But so will be “Heartless”

If I said to you, “Have a heart,” would you say I was calling you heartless?

Perry said, “if you don’t want to allow children brought to this country illegally — through no fault of their own — to pay instate tuition, you don’t have a heart. [paraphrased but has the “heart” part]

However, saying he used the word “heartless,” is in vogue -- just like RINO.

He has apologized for saying it. He didn’t say, “if anyone misunderstood....” He said it was inappropriate.

[Perry: “I was probably a bit over-passionate by using that word and it was inappropriate,” Perry admitted. “In Texas in 2001 we had 181 members of the legislature – only four voted against this piece of legislation – because it wasn’t about immigration it was about education.”]

Too late. Perry had one chance to show his thinking had shifted to a national level on the subject. Instead, he shows where his heart is, and it's easier to change one's mind than to change one's heart. I just don't see how Perry can undo the self-inflicted damage from that, because it will now only come across as pandering and/or flip-flopping.

This one is great too!

Strong and steady wins the race.

Cain is starting to get a little hysterical.

As Perry said, this is a Texas decision.

Gov. Perry believes in States Rights.

Do you?

He's not running for governor now, he's running for President. Somehow, the state's rights spin doesn't quite work in this instance.

He could have come out and said that he went along because it had strong support from the people of Texas, but he understands where national critics are coming from and he would re-examine his state policy stances from a national perspective.

But he didn't. Instead he showed where his heart was. On the wrong side of this issue for millions of conservatives. And it shows in his slide in the polls. Like I said, he had one shot to try and present himself as being willing to migrate his views on this subject to a national level. Not only did he fail to do that, but he also gave a strong impression that he would be unable personally to do that, and any subsequent stated shift in position would be pandering or flip-flopping.

First impressions are lasting impressions, and Perry made a horrible first impression with that comment. One that is going to be exceedingly difficult to overcome.

That is such a great ad. Pawlenty had one of the best ads, it was his last one. Perry hired him. You see who Perry is going after...not Cain but the one that has the money and organization set up. Romney is the one to beat. Neophyte’s aren’t a worry.

I wouldn’t give Rick Perry a dime, but I’ll be damned if his campaign doesn’t put out great ads. He and the other candidates need to hammer Romney on his flip-flopping in tomorrow’s debate.

You know what? I take back what I said about not donating to Perry’s campaign. I’d gladly give to any candidate who can successfully marginalize Slick Willard.

I'm not at all worried about Perry's chances. After all, this is American Politics we are talking about here.

Like Cain, who enjoyed a bump when the first debate started, then went to the near bottom and almost quit his campaign twice. Then all of a sudden, an obscure Straw Poll came out in Florida, the MSM went nuts and now Cain is supposedly the “One to beat”.

Perry is at his best when he is down and his strongest area that suits his ability best has yet to come. I am holding out judgment until then. There is lots of time yet to pass and underdogs seem to do well in America these days.

Wow, I’m glad you’re not my judge. ;) I’ve been on the giving end of many apologizes, so I have to take his apology at face value.

Cain can't benefit from hurting Romney, which is why he isn't attacking him. Cain is in a strong strategic position, but he's there with grossly inadequate forces. He doesn't have the fund raising base or the organization to mount a serious campaign; he can't capitalize on Romney's ideological vulnerability. If (when) Romney goes down Perry is the only candidate who can fill the vacuum Romney leaves behind.

Perry knows that, Romney knows that and all the political professionals also know that. That's why Romney and Perry are hammering each other while everyone else in the field lays off Romney.

The Cain campaign, the heartless comment, the debates generally, are sideshows. None of them will much affect the outcome. If Perry can convince most GOP voters that Romney is a liberal (which shouldn't be hard because he is) Perry wins. If Romney can kick up enough dust by counterattacking to keep voters confused about who and what he is, Romney wins. That's the universe of possible outcomes.

Watching this ad, it's hard to imagine that Romney can pull off the magic trick of making his liberalism disappear. This ad will be followed by others about Romney's environmentalism and his statist approach to economic management, etc. The smart money says Perry is the nominee.

More to the point, that is by far the better outcome for conservatives of the two realistic possibilities. Conservatives who keep on obsessing about trivia like Texas tuition rates are fouling the soup we all have to eat.

Your analysis is pretty good, and your last sentence, which I quoted, is spot on.

**Cain can’t benefit from hurting Romney, which is why he isn’t attacking him.**

The problem is that Cain endorsed him in the past. (Although I admit he didn’t have much of a selection when he did.) So anytime Cain does attack Romney, they’ll just remind everyone that he endorsed him not that long ago.
