Fukushima soil decontamination zone may be larger than expected

Topic: Global consequences of Japanese quake

The Japanese government said it would lay down new soil pollution standards for the area around the stricken Fukushima nuclear power station, expanding the soil decontamination zone to neighboring prefectures, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper said on Tuesday.

"Our goal is to reduce radiation levels to under 1 millisievert. Those areas with radiation levels between 1 millisievert and 5 millisieverts will naturally be covered," said Goshi Hosono, the state minister in charge of the Fukushima nuclear accident.

According to a preliminary decontamination plan made last month, about 1,778 square kilometers, or 13% of Fukushima Prefecture's total area will have to be cleared. Costs are expected to hit 1.14 trillion yen ($14.9 billion).

With areas showing radiation pollution between one and five millisieverts added, the decontamination area may spread to the neighboring Tochigi and Gunma prefectures.

Hosono, however, stopped short of saying if those prefectures would be included into the decontamination plan.

That would be huge amount of radioactive top soil. Where could they store it? Maybe people can buy it to grow flowers glowing in the dark. No longer need electricity to light up at night.

Why do I get the feeling that there are a couple guys who grow rice down in CA who are gonna end up totally filthy rich over this affair?

Not that there is anything wrong with that, I mean we have always been able to produce rice cheaper and with a higher quality than Japan.

Unless their RAD’s blow our way...

The whole damn thing is sad. The saddest thing IMHO is that no matter who you ask, you KNOW they are lying. If you ask anyone government-wise or TEPCO-wise, they will tell you “Big deal, but we can handle it...”.
If you ask environmental nuts on a tree somewhere they will say this is bigger than the big bang.
If you ask the media, they will tell you whatever it takes to keep coming back and trying to get answers.

Well said, as I've said before, we've not heard the last of this....not for some time yet.

You’re likely very correct.

I think it’ll be a few years, at least, until the full story and the full level of contamination is known.

Japan was already facing a prolonged economic slump and a demographic death spiral. I doubt this will help matters.
