Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) — The communications director for Herman Cain’s presidential campaign has resigned, CNN has learned.

Ellen Carmichael told CNN on Saturday her decision is firm but not yet finalized.

“I have resigned but the paperwork’s not final,” Carmichael said.

Carmichael explained her decision is a personal one and that she’s pursuing other professional opportunities. She also said that her assistant, Francis Boustany, is also leaving out of allegiance to Carmichael.

“It’s a very amicable departure,” Carmichael said. “He wished me the best of luck. And I will forever be fond of him and appreciative of this opportunity.”

In June, two other staffers left the Cain campaign. CNN asked Carmichael if her and Boustany’s departures are a sign of more trouble for Cain.

"No comment" She said.

Great timing to rain on the Cain surge. Why?

If you can’t take the heat, get the hell out of the kitchen.

Kinda strange, Bachmann comes on strong and then her team resigns. Cain gets going and his team resigns.

Its almost like someone called these people and told them to quit.

Saw Cain on TV with Leno last night. The man continues to impress me more than any of the other candidates.

He may be upgrading his campaign team now that he has more cash and viability as a candidate.

It will be interesting to see how much of a money bump he got in the quarter ended yesterday.

Cain is a fringe nut. This is meaningless.

Isn’t Cain about to go on his national book tour, rather than make campaign appearances, for a number of weeks?

(Yes, like Newt, he might be one of those in-it-for-the-book-sales guys.)

Look at McCain back in 08. His staffers were jumping ship also. IMHO, it appears as though the commie ‘RATS might be buying these people off to embarrass the candidates. It is too much of a coincidence that all of these “staffers” would just up and quit all of a sudden. I’d sure like to know what is going on here.

That is a bit strange isn’t it? I am not a big conspiracy guy, so I am not forming any opinions, but good job pointing that out.

I love Cain and would love to see him as the nominee then president. That said, it would take a strong stomach to be a communication director with his bold statements that are unafraid and unbridled. The brainwashing comment was, in my opinion, the right thing to say at the exact right time to capitalize on his surge. That said, it was so bold that I would have been too afraid as a communications director and probably upset.

I think whenever a campaign heats up, staff members begin to realize they are in over their heads and it is affecting their personal life. Some people just don’t want a job in a pressure cooker environment.

I wonder if his success in Florida has proven her wrong somehow. Like maybe she was recommending a particular strategy, he said no let’s do it this way, she said that’s sure be a disaster, then it turns out well and she looks like a fool.

Just speculatin’.
