[Texas: Laredo]Mayor Salinas and Congressman Cuellar Speak Out Against the Border Security Report

More state and local officials are speaking out about that report issued Monday by Department of Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples. The independent study co-authored by a retired general and a retired major general stated that conducting business in a Texas border county was like living in a war zone, and citizens are under attack around the clock. The report also stated that hundreds of people had been killed in Texas border counties because of spillover violence.

When asked where that information came from, an official wasn't able to give proof to support the claim but said about 500 people are said to have died of dehydration on private ranches after crossing the border since 2005. The report's authors say those deaths should also be considered homicide because of border violence.

Laredo’s mayor and Congressman Henry Cuellar are saying the report is purely political and a big concern. Mayor Raul Salinas says, “You’ve got the Commissioner of Agriculture that’s going to be running for Lt. Governor. This is political. The border has never been safer. What figures are they looking at? This is sensationalism.” Meanwhile, Congressman Cuellar added, “I know we need to do a lot more and I'm willing to work with them, but people shouldn’t be happy when they say conducting business like we are doing here today is like conducting business in a war zone.”

The study cost Texas taxpayers $80,000, which was paid to both retired military generals who are now consultants.

I would like to hear more about this before I lean either direction. It seems likely both sides may be fudging on facts.I have an uncle in the Laredo area who would argue the peacefulness with you.

I seem to recall long ago that Texans on or near the border were under constant attack by illegals either damaging property or actually physically harming those Texans. If the governor was securing the border as he claims, why would this be continuing?

$80,000? It costs that much to read a newspaper?

Both of them are democrats.
The democrats loyalty is to their party first and foremost. They are taking the sides of napalatano and obama over the facts on the ground.

I guess they never heard about a website called “Laredo’s missing” containing names of young women kidnapped from Laredo to become “girlfriends” of the drug cartel army leaders. That site has since been taken down, but it was up from around 2002 to about 2008.

Dammit what is so sick about this is that these two were probably born here and raised here, hell the mayor was a former FBI agent and STILL they choose their party over their country.
