Perry campaign goes on the defensive
Los Angeles Times ^ | September 29, 2011 | Seema Mehta, Los Angeles Times

Reporting from Clive, Iowa—

Rick Perry's campaign is fighting back forcefully to defend his record and reassure supporters concerned about his shaky debate performances, sending the Texas governor's wife on the campaign trail to explain his position on immigration and holding telephone town halls in which the candidate himself engaged voters on those subjects.During a swing through Iowa, Texas First Lady Anita Perry argued that her husband, who has faced fire about his support for in-state college tuition rates for illegal immigrants and his opposition to a border fence, was being unfairly castigated.

Anita Perry said she had heard such criticism in Iowa and felt she needed to clarify her husband's positions, saying the state offers the benefit to residents of Texas who have attended a state school for a minimum of three years, have earned a high school degree and are pursuing citizenship.

Anita just doesn't get it.

We don't care what those people have accomplished. They are now adult illegal aliens and its time to take their American high school skills and go back home.

It is not time for them to dip into the American goody bag one more time. Millions more Mexicans are ahead of them in line!

I don’t know if Rick Perry is hiding behind his wife’s skirts or if he is letting Anita do the talking because he can’t put a coherent thought together. If this works, expect Anita to start subbing for Rick in the debates.

I am really starting to despise this guy. He sends wifey out to spin for him? Really?

With his cluelessness and bizarre behavior, Perry has taken me from interested to appalled to hatred in a week.

Stop rewarding the children of criminals. Send them back with their parents.

And El Paso, I heard that schoolbuses go to the border each morning to pick up mexican children to bring them to American schools where they are fed breakfast and lunch and partake in the free education- most likely in Spanish.

So pardonnez mon francais but STFU unless you are for getting them the hell out of our country and put back in the dungheap of theirs. And don’t call me heartless. Too many American children’s parents are unemployed and those beaners are taking food out of American’s mouths. So, in reality, YOU are the heartless one for not caring about Americans.

Both Romney and Perry are no-go’s for me. I just won’t vote for either of them.

That hasn’t stopped some Republicans from criticizing Perry for going too easy on Muslims (as well as immigrants) in Texas. Here’s what Tom Tancredo, a former Republican congressman from Colorado and a Republican president hopeful in the last election, had to say in a post for The Daily Caller:

He extends his taxpayer-funded compassion not only to illegal aliens but also to Muslim groups seeking to whitewash the violent history of that religion. Perry endorsed and facilitated the adoption in Texas public schools of a pro-Muslim curriculum unit developed by Muslim clerics in Pakistan….

Perry’s close alliances with pro-Islamic Republican activists like Grover Norquist give additional cause for concern. Norquist supports open borders and amnesty for illegal aliens and is well known in Washington, D.C. circles for his tireless efforts to build Republican bridges to pro-amnesty groups and to slander advocates of immigration enforcement as “racists.” Norquist also has close ties to the Council of American Islamic Relations (CAIR), whose Houston chapter bragged in a recent newsletter that “Rick Perry’s relationship with Muslims may set him apart.” Precisely so, but not in a way that helped him with voters in the Florida straw poll.

Perry is friends with the Aga Khan, the head of a Shia Muslim sect called Ismailis. As governor, he’s had the support of politically conservative Muslims in Texas as well.

“States like Texas are left with one of two choices: whether we take care of those populations or they get on welfare, which is greater cost to our taxpayers, or we give them an opportunity to graduate from Texas schools, the opportunity to be a contributing member of society.”

Anita, it’s illegal for them to work here. How will they contribute?

Illegals need to “pursue citizenship” like everyone else who wants to come into the country. This issue did him in. Americans really are sick and tired of illegal pandering politicans and open borders.

When Reagan gave amnesty to illegals the deal was that the border would then be closed and there would be no more build up of illegal immigrants in the Nation. The border was never closed.

It’s too bad because Perry (maybe Michelle before she sunk herself) was the only one talking about States’ rights.

Looks like I have a different initial impression of this article than most others - I see something from the leftist LA Times trying to drive home the point that Perry is “defensive” and “shaky” and see leftists trying to put a dagger into a possibly strong Republican contender when they have the opportunity. I’m not in the Perry camp; I think it’s too early to be absolutely and unequivocally in any single candidate’s camp at this point. This guy shows signs that he might be “all hat and no cattle”. I just am skeptical as hell when I see the LA Times, NY Times, Washington Post, etc., etc. going after someone - since those MSM organs are HEAVILY invested in Obama winning in 2012, I think they are trying to poison the well at every opportunity. I’m equally skeptical when they start praising a Repub (like we’ve been seeing with Romney) - they pulled that trick in 2008 with McCain.

IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO “PURSUE CITIZENSHIP” BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN ILLEGALLY PRESENT IN THE USA FOR OVER 6 MONTHS AND SO ARE AUTOMATICALLY UNABLE TO APPLY FOR 10 YEARS...these lawless politicians are just making sh*t up now!

Geez this is becoming a bad episode of All In The Family.

Is Anita going to interpret what Perry really meant and is Perry’s son going to be coach, hairdresser and makeup consultant.

I want to elect a President, not adopt a family!

Adios señor Perry!

“Anita, it’s illegal for them to work here. How will they contribute?”

Easy question, through AMNESTY, of course - only Rick Perry has enough sense (maybe not much, but enough here) to not talk about AMNESTY until the Republicans nominate him.

Nothing else makes sense...if Perry and spouse expect these Illegals to CONTRIBUTE to society.

No Muslim Cleric in Pakistan developed a curriculum unit for TX schools. One school wanted to offer a class but Perry recommended that it not be used. The Aga Khan is the brother of Actress Rita Hayward’s daughter. This particular individual has worked with Perry on some charities and he and his wife have been involved with charities in Israel. This particular sect of Muslims are more secular. Perry is the Governor for all the different people who live in TX and has to treat everyone fairly. Perry is a staunch Christian Conservative, who could actually beat Obama. However, these comments have a grain of truth, and are certainly not the whole truth. Grover Norquist, well he doesn’t spend much time in TX.

They have to apply for citizenship one way or another. A good number go into the Military and can earn citizenship that way. A number of them have died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Anita would make a great first lady. Rick Perry would still be a universe better than Alinksky Jr.

The US military is prohibited from accepting illegals.

Legal immigrants can enter the military and can earn citizenship.

I just going to go ahead and assume you confused the two.

Thanks, it’s like you said: “Nothing else makes sense”

Yet many Perry supporters here just gloss over this important point.

It’s one of the reasons I believe so many of them are also amnesty supporters.

“It’s one of the reasons I believe so many of them are also amnesty supporters.”

I’m not as sure. I think a lot of these people are simply BLINDED by Perry, as he happens to be the governor of a successful southern state...and simply is seen as up to the job (obviously untrue now). As far as Amnesty goes, they figure he COULD NEVER support that...and that even he considers the Dream Act to be mistake, but cannot admit that for political reasons.

In other words, they’re still against Amnesty, but they are trying to rationalize their way past Perry’s problems...probably in the hope of getting rid of Romney.
