GM announced that its second-quarter profits had nearly doubled, to $2.5 billion. To put that in context, in April 2010, GM reported losses of $4.3 billion. Revenue at GM rose 19 percent, to $39.4 billion. What? Is he saying they lost $4.3 billion AND made $39.4billion?

Hey EJ, you lisping pansy. GM and Chrysler didn’t pay all the money back. As some warranty holders of GM cars are finding out, there is a difference between New GM and Old GM. Old GM still owes money, plus New GM used new Tarp funds to pay their end of the debt. On top of that, the Volt technology is now going to our close friends in China.
I often wonder if this dim bulb EJ actually writes any genuine articles or if he just opens the envelopes he gets from the WH and submits the letter within to his publisher.

I have been a GM man my whole life but I will never buy another GM car because of the Obama confiscation (theft) of shareholder equity and other obligations so he could hand over billions in wealth to the UAW.
As if that wasn’t enough, the $5,000 bonus (handout) to UAW members is the icing on the cake.

“State capitalism” = crony capitalism. Obastard arbitrarily decided that the bond holders would get practically nothing and then turned around a GAVE the UAW half ownership in the company.

GM isn’t back.
Its doors are currently open, because of a large government infusion of cash and forced debt forgiveness (read rape of the bond holders).
Smells a lot like Solendra. I wonder what the government’s projected date of bankruptcy is for GM.

But, yes, this was socialism -- or, perhaps, "state capitalism" ...The word you're looking for, E.J., is fascism.

From the CNN Money story.....
The profit stemmed from a rebound in U.S. sales, strong growth in China -- now GM's largest market -- and a much lower cost structure after a 2009 trip through bankruptcy.
This really isn't something they should be bragging about.

GM is not back. GM disappeared by GM’s own reckoning. The company called GM now said old warranties were the promises made by the company that disappeared and not their problem as they were not that company.
“Now its (union) members can fairly claim a right to some of the benefits.”
Paid for by those who lost money. Now that the new company using the GM name has skimmed the cream they surely should make money.
Dionne blathers on.

Wave the magic wand and dispose of several tens of billions of debt, and they should be quite profitable ... for a little while ... until the UAW robs them (or is that us, the taxpayers) blind again.

GM is owned by the UAW and the federal government. It survives on massive infusions of taxpayer money. It’s really a socialist enterprise. I don’t hold out much hope for it.
