Romney says illegal immigrants get a $100,000 break on UT tuition over 4 years (facts)
Austin American Statesman ^ | September 28, 2011 | The Truth-O-Meter

Posted on 09/28/2011 4:01:54 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

........To take a step back and view the big picture: Of 1.3 million college students in Texas in 2010, 1.2 percent (16,476) were illegal immigrants receiving tuition breaks through the affidavit route. (The even bigger picture: Texas’ 1.65 million illegal immigrants made up 6.7 percent of the state’s total population in 2010, according to the Pew Hispanic Center.)

Stated another way, only 1 percent of Texas’ illegal immigrants got the in-state rates in 2010. And of those, 73 percent got an average reduction of $2,600 or less; the remaining 27 percent average closer to $10,000 per year.

So let’s return to Romney’s statement: "Four years of college, almost $100,000 discount if you are an illegal alien (and) go to the University of Texas."

For the 612 affidavit students at the University of Texas last year, Romney’s figure of $22,000 per year is approximately correct, even a bit low; but quadrupling the real average adds up to $90,800 over four years, not $100,000.

Not only is that UT tuition break the very highest that Romney could have cited among Texas public universities, it went to only 4 percent of the illegal immigrants who received in-state tuition rates last year.

The vast majority of affidavit students in Texas last year got an average in-state tuition reduction of $1,600 to $2,600. If they got that rate for four years, the total "discount" would be $6,400 to $10,400. And that group of 12,028 community college affidavit students made up less than 1 percent of the 1,364,911 college students enrolled in Texas last year.

Romney’s $100,000 figure is only $9,200 off the mark for the University of Texas, but with 73 percent of affidavit students receiving $10,400 or less over four years, his choice to use UT as an example gives a skewed representation of the reality of illegal immigrants seeking college education in Texas…..” PolitiFact-Texas

Texas's Immigration Choices Rick Perry's pragmatism draws fire from his presidential rivals - …….”Most children of illegal immigrants—some 73%, according to the Pew Hispanic Center—are U.S. citizens by birth. But as of 2008 there were 1.5 million children in the U.S. who are illegal. The Supreme Court has ruled that these children are entitled to a K-12 education. Lawmakers in Texas, which is home to the nation's second-largest illegal population after California, determined that tuition breaks for these residents made economic sense. So did the state's business community, which lobbied for the measure on the grounds that a better educated population would translate into stronger economic growth.”……..

Texas Gov. Perry uses ethnically charged language to defend immigration position…………”He opposes the federal version of the tuition law, which Hispanic groups have pushed hard for and which also includes a path to citizenship for students. And during the debate, his staff emailed a news release to reporters that sounded a lot like all the other GOP candidates: “Gov. Perry opposes amnesty and the federal DREAM Act. Washington must first secure the border before we can have any rational discussion about immigration reform. Once that is accomplished, then we can have a conversation about how to address immigration.”

Rick Perry an immigration radical? Hardly …Overall during 2009-10, 16,476 students qualified under the residency law for in-state rates: 12,028 were enrolled at Texas' 80 community, technical and state colleges; 4,403 were at the 35 public universities; and 45 were at eight health-related institutions. That represents about 1 percent of all students enrolled in the state's colleges and universities, according to the Coordinating Board..... This summer, the U.S. Supreme Court also rejected a challenge to a similar law in California. -- Maybe this kind of policy choice wasn't right for Romney's Massachusetts, Santorum's Pennsylvania or Bachmann's Minnesota. But Texas lawmakers, including Perry, have concluded it's right for Texas: a public investment that will yield a long-term payoff for the state's well-being.”

Rick Perry's Intriguing Idea for Bi-National Health Insurance …“Contrary to Sen. Santorum’s impression, the idea here was to explore the possibility of allowing private insurers to cover health services provided in either Texas or Mexico. It was an attempt at studying the deregulation of the provision of health insurance by private entities.

The Truth Found a Voice in Rick Perry[snip] Mitt Romney wants the status quo, which continues to feed the pipeline of generational, programmed victims -- driving trapped and dependent people into the arms of the growing army of the Democratic “fight for social justice” Party. Rick Perry wants to change the status quo and bring more voters into freedom – businesses owners, entrepreneurs eager to join the Republican Conservative Ascendancy Party – no matter what their last name or color, or gender or faith. And the border must be sealed first in order to do this.

Do the math. Rush Limbaugh has. Rush, like Gov. Perry, wants everyone to succeed (not secede). Rush, like Rick Perry, knows we’re at the crossroads that will decided the future path of the United States (and the world). Will it be Perpetual Dependency or Conservative Ascendancy? Democratic Party leaders are herding us into warring camps hoping to take us on the road to socialism. The states must take back power from the Federal government and get this country back on the road to free market capitalism.”….

If The Left Can Ruin Rick Perry, They Can Rule You [snip] ......Currently, the Left is battling Gov. Rick Perry’s stand on Big Education (unions) and EPA Energy and Environment dictates. Trial lawyers have made it known they plan to block any more power going to Rick Perry, as he has won so many victories against them as the Gov. of Texas. The Left knows Rick Perry has his own religious beliefs and does not adhere to their pseudo green religion. They know he understands the land, that he was brought up in a religious home and has worked for everything he has. The Left knows he attended a school that didn’t teach him to hate his country but rather instilled love of country. They know he served in the military and still encourages boys to become Boy Scouts. The Left can not put the lie to the fact that Texas' economy is running rings around Obama's disastrous economic policies. The Left knows that when Rick Perry shows compassion – has a heart – it isn’t because he wants to make you dependent on him but rather to set you free."......

Andrew Romano: But just to be clear: if border security is accomplished, you can envision some sort of path to citizenship for people who are here illegally.

Rick Perry: Sure.

Well, Romney has always been a liar, and those that support him are deliberately pretending to be “offended”. They want Romney to be President so bad they will do and say anything to accomplish that.

LOL

As the facts come out, that well circulated comment is losing its punch and starting to sound like pouting and stubborn retorts by a 15 year old.

This is a problem that Texas did not make but like other states is having to address because of the problem the feds have caused by not sealing the border.

Rick Perry has stated flatly that he will seal the border, that he does not support the Federal Dream Act and that he does not support Amnesty.

You do understand that Palin and every other candidate is for a path to citizenship, right?

Rick Perry has had it with the Feds and has left no light between the fact that the border must be sealed before anything else is brought to the table. He said he does not support amnesty.

Texas and the country is in the mess we're in because the Feds continue to grant amnesty and then start the same process all over again and they refuse to defend the border.

Drug cartels and human traffickers on the border laugh at the weak U.S. policy and it has made the situation even more untenable than ever.

But then the Left always creates groups to exploit and drive into their "social justice" party.

Democrats Unveil the Weapon of the Future........."All the groups involved in the Wisconsin campaign were superstructure groups. The unions, the very core organizations of the superstructure, without which it's no more than a pack of vegetarians and aging hippies. The media, which serves as its propaganda arm. And the judiciary, which is broadly infiltrated by leftist partisans whose allegiance has been awarded to something other than the law. "..........

Every RINO is of course. Michelle Bachmann isn’t and neither am I. If Rick Perry wants to call me heartless instead of promising me that he will veto an amnesty bill, he can go to hell.

If Perry weathers this storm it will become clear that every candidate that is serious has the same positions he does. Then it will come down to the real record and that is where Perry will make his move.

It's funny that those pushing Palin say she doesn't have to enter the race until Nov. if she doesn't want yet Perry is toast.

I have seen this same situation play out in Perry's other elections.

What a load of crap.

>> Stated another way, only 1 percent of Texas’ illegal immigrants got the in-state rates in 2010. And of those, 73 percent got an average reduction of $2,600 or less; the remaining 27 percent average closer to $10,000 per year. <<

What only 1% got tuition breaks? Yes, because only one percent started college. Is there a soul around who believed Romney meant that those not going to college got tuition breaks for not going to college? YET THIS LYING CRAP would leave most people to believe that 99% of Illegal immigrants were denied tuition benefits, when none were.

Romney said “at the University of Texas,” because he meant “at the University of Texas.” The fact that less valued Texas universities have lower out-of-state tuition rates hardly changes Romney’s math.

>> So let’s return to Romney’s statement: “Four years of college, almost $100,000 discount if you are an illegal alien (and) go to the University of Texas.”
For the 612 affidavit students at the University of Texas last year, Romney’s figure of $22,000 per year is approximately correct, even a bit low; but quadrupling the real average adds up to $90,800 over four years, not $100,000. <<

Romney’s 100% accurate. Most college students do not graduate in four years flat. Romney said, “average.”

>> The vast majority of affidavit students in Texas last year got an average in-state tuition reduction of $1,600 to $2,600. If they got that rate for four years, the total “discount” would be $6,400 to $10,400. And that group of 12,028 community college affidavit students made up less than 1 percent of the 1,364,911 college students enrolled in Texas last year. <<

Once again, Romney was plain that he was referring to the University of Texas, not local community colleges; not a soul in the room expects that Romney meant local community colleges.

KNOCK OFF THE CRAP!!! I CAN’T BELIEVE PERRY’S RADICAL LEFT-WING DEFENDERS AT THE AUSTIN STATESMAN HAVE ME DEFENDING ROMNEY!!!!!!!

Now they want Chris Christie — who holds many nonconservative positions. If you matched him up to Rick Perry, Christie comes up short. He’s more a Romney candidate. Maybe that’s who’s calling for him to enter — establishment GOP who see Perry beating out Romney.
