"The company has a zero-tolerance policy in this regard." Charlie Brown and Sally? Unlikely, it is with Linus.

Upper management shouldn’t fish in the company pond...

This is fairly unusual. I thought personnel matters were ‘confidential,’ so hope the CEO didn’t open himself and the company up for litigation. Can’t imagine this wasn’t run by a team of lawyers. Nothing to indicate if the inappropriate relationship was hetero or homo.

Charlie’s comments afterwards were, “Why is everybody always picking on me?”

Another poster was right: they would have handled this privately had the improper relationship been with a same-sex lover.

Companies are very sensitive about relationships between management and employees because if things go badly they can be hit with expensive lawsuits as well as EEOC hassles. All the drama is very bad for morale, too. These things aren’t even that good an idea between managers at the same level of responsibility, and when a manager is having an affair with someone further down the food chain, it can really be a mess.
