Christie Courted, Still Says No (again)
WSJ ^ | Monday September 26, 2011

A determined cadre of Republican donors is casting wishful eyes on New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie in an 11th-hour push to persuade the former prosecutor to enter the 2012 presidential race.

[...]

Mr. Christie's aides say the governor hasn't budged from his months-long insistence that he won't enter the presidential fray, despite what one described as a "relentless" stream of calls over the last week from prominent Republicans urging him to run.

"None of that triggers any new thinking on his part," said one Christie adviser. "He's very polite to these people: 'Thank you for calling. That's very flattering. I'll let you know.' And I think they interpret that, 'Ah-ha! A rethinking.' "

[....]

But party operatives, and some of Mr. Christie's own advisers, cite numerous reasons why a presidential run presents daunting challenges, with the first balloting less than five months away. Unlike Mr. Perry, who entered the race last month, Mr. Christie has no national fund-raising apparatus to rely on, and a relatively scant home-state network.

Mr. Christie's aides, and donors who move in his fund-raising circles, say the effort to cajole him to run has been limited to a relatively small contingent of disenchanted but wealthy Republicans, many of them from the Northeast and California. Mr. Christie will attend a fund-raiser in California during his trip to the West Coast this week.

The sad part about these stories is the knee-jerk anti-Christie reaction he gets from some people. He never said he was going to run. And he is doing about as good a job as any Repubican could do in NJ. And he is supporting the party by fundraising across the country. People need to realize Christie is a positive force in the Republican Party. As governor of a liberal, Dem-dominated state, he is doing a great job.

Christie would be a lousy choice. At least he is smart enough to know it.

He is probably about as good as New Joisey can get, and that’s where he belongs, doing the job he was elected for.

Stop asking him already. He’s said no a hundred times.

He is, he has been a great governor for New Jersey and has done miraculous things. He is just not right for the entire country and those who have been pursuing him have done him a great disservice.

I know the term RINO gets thrown around a lot and many times undeserved. But from my understanding, Christie is left on the social issues. Is that someone we really want as our nominee?

The establishment is desperate for a milquetoast candidate. Romney can’t close the deal, so now they’ll keep begging Christie.

It’s not Cain gaining moment, it’s Romney.

What part of “NO” don’t they understand? Come to think of it, what part of “shall not be infringed” does Christie not understand?

From a New Jerseyian - STAY IN NEW JERSEY CHRIS CHRISTIE.

You are the best we can hope for in a governor here - unfortunately.

Do as you promised and eliminate those government mandates and taxes which are keeping businesses and jobs out of the state AND STAY AWAY FROM THE WHITE HOUSE!!!!

Great news. Gov. Christie has undoubtedly been courted and is being tempted and seduced by big money donors. I am sure he is being flattered and stroked. I have been praying that he is able to remain strong and not give in to the pressure.

It looks like he is going to stay tough and stay here in NJ. This is very good news. He's still in his first term. It's not his fault the GOP lacks credible national leadership. Stay strong Governor! And stay here!
