Of course, this is where his immigration position comes in, and where my enthusiasm for him suddenly drops like a rock.

Gov. Perry is the top executive of a border state that has a 1250 mile INTERNATIONAL border that he's repeatedly asked help to secure (even tried to personally hand Obama a letter detailing the problem and asking for federal help as Obama exited Air Force One on a fundraiser to Austin, TX. A letter that he would not take and that Valerie Jarret accepted in a dismissive gesture on the tarmac).

The state of Texas spends $100M yearly from state funds, using among other things an elite Texas Ranger force to try to secure our long border with Mexico. Rick Perry wants and has asked for drones in the air and boots on the ground (but not a fence except in urban areas where it helps).

The Federal government with it's social engineering, it's public school "don't ask for a child's U.S. citizen status" dictate, and their continued inaction on this, have put Texas in the position of resorting to working the problem as it relates to the state. So the children of illegal immigrants who have attended a minimum 3 years of high school in Texas and graduated (who want go on the college) - who are working toward citizenship, they are allowed to pay in-state tuition. This makes them more likely to contribute to the state economy than take from it. This is a big help because Texas pays a lot of money on education and health care costs due to the current federal inaction of securing the border.

I think a President Perry would have the brains and fortitude and the credibility, to finally do something about this -- no one else will. Gov. Perry has said that the border MUST BE SEALED before any talk of "where do we go next" will take place -- he said he will not repeat the cycle that keeps occurring.

Rick Perry also spoke out AGAINST Arizona’s dealing with the problem, which tells me that he really doesn’t want to deal with it, he was just play acting with Obama because it he knew it would go nowhere, but it would make him look as if he were trying to do something.

As a Texan (not by birth, by choice), I can’t see any candidate that would do more to secure the border than Perry.
As far as the fence goes, I think Perry learned his lesson during the TTC fiasco. I couldn’t stand the fact that by eminent domain they’d seize private lands for a highway that in many cases divided a ranchers land so bad that to get to the other 1/2 of his land required driving 20 or 30 miles up & back to the next exit.

Building that fence, cutting many ranchers off from the Rio Grande and essentially ceding that land to Mexico is obscene.

I say keep your big government in Austin & DC & leave these people alone.

Also, I liked the way Perry finally backed down on the vaccine instead of who cares about the will of the people like Obama. I admit Perry may have thought he was doing good due to the good will in his heart, but again, leave the people alone.

As far as Mitt Romney’s, “you’ve been delt 4 aces.” He is abolutely right, our Texas economy is growing like crazy. We’ve absorbed (reluctantly) millions of illegals & US newcomers & still continue to grow.

Link? I've heard him say he doesn't believe in building a fence, so how does he plan to SEAL THE BORDER without a fence?

Thanks the details on Perry’s border policy. Sounds like he’s tougher on illegal immigration than many people think.

I’m still not sure about the tuition for children of illegals, though. Sounds like O’Bummer’s rationale for socialized medicine — we will save money by spending it.

Your defense of Perry’s efforts to secure the border was eloquent, and I couldn’t have explained it better! Thank you for trying to set the record straight about a situation that too many people just don’t “get.”
