Betcha didnt see this one coming.
On MSNBCs Thursday broadcast of Hardball, host Chris Matthews committed the mortal sin he nearly parroted the theory that mortified so many of the networks hosts and guests throughout the day. Matthews called Social Security a Ponzi scheme the day after Republican Texas Gov. Rick Perry doubled down on his previous statements echoing that sentiment in the Republican debate (h/t Matt Lewis)
Matthews first put forth what he thought Social Security was originally intended to be: You pay for it while you work. When you retired and have no other form of income, this will help you out. In fact, a lot were impoverished in the old days without Social Security. Its a great anti-poverty program. But then people started to live past 65. Even the great Franklin Roosevelt didnt make it to 65. In those days, if you made it to 65, you were lucky. You got a few bucks on Social Security.

Very surprised Chris would admit this.
I turn 58 this week and don’t imagine I’ll see any SSI checks at 66, as currently scheduled.
zer0 himself, PBUH, effectively let the cat out of the ponzi bag when he recently said (threatened) that if the debt ceiling wasn’t raised, SS checks might not go out.
Probably not it has all been spent on illegals.
Chris’s career is a Ponzi scheme—I used to tune in to see politcal commentary and got an ad for the DNC.
The entire Federal government has now set a course to be entirely turned into a Ponzi scheme, but as has been pointed out, Ponzi schemes a al Madoff, are VOLUNTARY. Our FERAL Government (that’s right FERAL) is a mandatory Ponzi scheme.
He’s got the market cornered at 5 pm, unless you like Eric Bolling fighting with Bob Beckel...
Good catch.
I don’t believe that SS is the Ponzi Scheme. The fractional reserve banking system which forms the backbone of western capitalism and federal reserve banking is the ponzi scheme. Social security is just another victim of the ponzi schemers. The failings of SS are simply manifestations of the unraveling of the real ponzi scheme.
To hear Matthews, who turns red and spits at the thought of Perry, admit it is a Ponzi scheme, is telling. If Mitt tries to use this to scare seniors it wont work either.
The Dem strategists who think this will hurt Perry in the general are really not in tune with the public. I also think the reason Rove and Cheney are bothered about his comment is their fear of losing Florida. I expect Perry to be up in the polls greatly in the next month, even in Florida.
Chris Matthews is, first and foremost, someone who says the first thing that pops into his pea brain. Even in his Liberalism, he's all over the map. Before it dawned on him that he would be supporting Perry, the idea popped into his empty head that, "Gee, it is kinda like a Ponzi Scheme, isn't it?" and then the words just flowed out of his mouth.
I think you would see some of your SSI checks. Those below 50 probably won’t and those below 40 (like me) definitely won’t see any money back from SSI
I’ll be happy—THRILLED— to live long enough to not get my social security (43 yrs old now.)
Although Epictetus teaches me that since it’s out of my control, I shouldn’t care either way. But I can’t help it. I love life.
The GOP should keep this clip as a campaign ad. “Media Darling of The DNC says Social Security is a Ponzi Scheme.”
I think it will play well. I also know that the TEA Party people are made up of alot of 60+ folks. They all understand the stakes here. By the way, Obama threatened to withhold checks if the debt ceiling wasn't raised, how comfortable do you think that made people, to be at the mercy of some dictator who is barely American.
Thank God someone man enough to admit to the calamity that the whole world knows is coming has come on the scene and is demanding action. I don't know what his plan is but ignoring the problem because we don't want to upset old people is short sighted, dumb, irresponsible, dishonest and it sells short the senior generation.
