A 500-foot crane performing cleanup work at the National Cathedral fell over Wednesday, damaging at least one building and several vehicles near the Cathedral.

Reports came in of the collapse around 11 a.m. There are reports that at least one person was injured.

Richard Weinberg, a spokesperson for the Cathedral, told News4 the crane, positioned on the south side, crashed into two adjoining buildings -- the Herb Cottage and the Church House. The main structure was not damaged in the accident.

Early this week the giant crane removed debris from the around the cathedral's. Crews worked to clear broken stone from the Cathedral's upper faces so that scaffolding could be erected for the repair effort.

The August 23 5.8-magnitude earthquake rattled the Cathedral, breaking limestone ornamentation from the spires.

Man... I hope the operator wasn’t up there at the time. Lord, that would be a sickening feeling.

You have to be careful with cranes’, they tend to be a little top heavy ... especially if it’s windy.

Prayers for anyone injured.

Large crane operators must charge a fair amount just to cover their insurance.

Looks like they had to set up on sloped, soft ground.

Looks like a truck/traveling crane. Operator is ground based.

As the Chinese would say, Obama has clearly lost “the mandate of Heaven”.

The cathedral is run by an outfit that used to be Christian, right?

It wasn’t a towercrane. Looked like it was one of those 16 wheel 50 tonners.

Obama is supposed to lead an “ecumenical” service there Sunday night to observe 9/11. Muslims, Hindus, Buddhist nuns, etc. Guess who was excluded? Catholics, Southern Baptists and evangelical Christians. On Fox’s F&F this morning they were discussing this and one of them quipped that there were a few more Southern Baptists than Buddhist nuns in the US.

Met a crane operator in Corpus Christi, who was later killed in a crane collapse. One of the tallest cranes in the world. He said he made $220k/year, 22 years old. Guess he earned it.
