Democrats Urge Obama To 'Go Big' With Jobs Package
NPR.org ^ | 2 Sept 2011 | Mara Liasson

When a president asks for a prime-time slot to address a joint session of Congress, he is signaling to the country that he has something very important to say. Next Thursday, President Obama will once again try to make a hard political pivot to the issue of jobs.

Obama will confront two big problems when he stands in the well of the House next week. The first is political: the loss of voters' confidence in his handling of the economy. The second is the economy itself. A new estimate released by the White House on Thursday shows the economy growing at an anemic 1.7 percent and unemployment staying at 9 percent in 2012.

"He has to push forward a plausible, credible jobs package that will target that rate and start to finally bring it down," says Jared Bernstein, the former top economist for Vice President Joe Biden.

Obama previewed the speech Monday, saying he would be "laying out a series of steps that Congress can take immediately to put more money in the pockets of working families and middle-class families, to make it easier for small businesses to hire people, to put construction crews to work rebuilding our nation's roads and railways and airports, and all the other measures that can help to grow this economy."

The president's jobs package will almost certainly include measures for payroll tax relief, business tax credits for hiring and infrastructure projects. Bill Galston, a former aide to former President Clinton, says he thinks the president needs to go even bigger and lay out a growth agenda that includes a solution to the mortgage debt crisis and a long-term vision for fundamental tax reform.

“Go big” for rats is codespeak for “spend more”

Obama has no clue about economics, the role of government, or even American history/culture. He is becoming inconsequential in the debate about how to fix the economy and the only bullet in his gun is deficit spending.

I won’t watch because it does not matter. Seriously, this guy will never understand. It’s not in his DNA.

LOL how many times has he said he is going to pivot to jobs over past 3 years?!?!?

Hmmm, about as many times as he has said he will focus on jobs like a laser, or as many times as he has said he thinks about jobs first thing in morning, or as many times as he has said he thinks about jobs last thing before bed...Phooey!

The only way to REALLY restore jobs would be to repeal 99.999% of everything Øbama has done in office. IOW, the misery will continue until the teleprompter gets HIS pink slip.

“President Obama will once again try to make a hard political pivot to the issue of jobs.”

Doing the same thing again is a pivot? I guess they mean a 360 pivot.

After working on it for 2 weeks, and with an hour speech, the marxist ought to know exactly which part of America he is going to destroy with this speech already. I predict he will raise income taxes by 30% on “rich” people making more than $100k/year, to build shovel ready highways with illegal alien workers. It will be better if the rich people just pay the Mullah and we skip the shovel ready bulding part, less costly in the long run. Otherwise the Mullah will force the highway contratcors to give the dinero back as campaign contributions in early 2012 so he can spread the wealth around you know. And, he will have Bernakebus print a couple trillion for the bankers so they can have christmas bonuses this year, also in time for DNC/Omullah campaign fund season.

GO BIG!!! REAL BIG!!!

Huge tax increases, a new stimulus, bailouts for all!

And then go bye-bye. It won't pass and you'll be gone soon.

(Just my Obama plan.)

For Jared's sake, I hope he doesn't put that on his resume.

The President has announced he has a plan to create new jobs. Whoop-Dee-Doo! Obama is in deep trouble.

Another speech by Obama will not create new jobs or solve the enormous economic problems facing America.

Tax cuts, deregulation and fiscal responsibility in WashDC will begin to get things back on track. Eventually. First, Obama must go!

"A recession is when your neighbor loses his job. A depression is when you lose yours. And recovery is when Jimmy Carter loses his."
Ronald Reagan, 1980 Campaign

Progressives define “stimulus” as wealth redistribution to their supporters and special interests.

Conservatives define “stimulus” as the day Obama leaves the White House.

As soon as someone accepts the concept that government can provide “stimulus” at all, one becomes a socialist. At that point the argument simply becomes a matter of degree.

saying he would be "laying out a series of steps that Congress can take immediately to put more money in the pockets of working families and middle-class families

A Democrat Lexicon:

"Working Families" = Non-working families, such as underclass single women living in Section 8 housing collecting welfare payments by right of having numerous children by various men

"Middle-class Families" = Working families.

"The Rich" = Anyone who owns or operates a business.
