One of President Barack Obama's harshest Hispanic critics on immigration policy Tuesday signalled that the president and the Latino leaders finally are getting back on the same page.
In a Chicago press conference, U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Chicago, strongly backed a recent White House move to focus deportations on those convicted of felonies, ending action against illegal immigrants who have otherwise lived here without crossing the law.
In a written statement, Mr. Gutierrez said the action will "move us in the right direction."
But Mr. Gutierrez went much further at the press conference when asked about the policy shift.
"This is the Barack Obama we were waiting for," Mr. Gutierrez declared, to some applause from an audience at the Illinois Coalition for Immigration Rights' Loop offices. "Sometimes it takes 30 years. But he showed up."

"Democratic strategists have been worried that the huge increase in deportations during Mr. Obama's term might seriously weaken the president's support in a community he'll need in the 2012 election. Mr. Gutierrez, in earlier statements, has played into those concerns, making it clear he was not happy with the White House.
The congressman cautioned that he'll be watching how the new policy is implemented. And he urged the president to issue "hardship" waivers for married couples with children who face the deportation of one spouse unless the spouse leaves the country for 10 years."
Good that will drive every sane person into our camp!
The only people being deported are felons. Why? Because a felon can’t vote.
That's a joke, right?
Have they forgotten that THIS administration is SUING The State of Arizona for their enforcement of federal immigration laws?
Want a good laugh? Replace “Mr.” with “Senor” in the puff piece.

Grow up, K?
I'll agree that to a few people in Chicago this tidbit of an article by a blogger is a big deal....
Luis ought to know about felonies. He’s one of the most corrupt politicians in IL (and that’s saying something). We really need to deport him to Mexico for America’s good. This guy is BAD NEWS.
