Possible Rifle Range In Jerome County Concerns Residents(ID)

JEROME COUNTY< ID (KMVT-TV) - Discussions about a rifle range in eastern Jerome County are underway yet again.

The Jerome County Commissioners are looking at possibly opening up a range three miles west of the Jerome Minidoka county line.

But, this proposal is worrying people who live in the area.

The Carneys own an organic straw field being a farmer is something they pride themselves on.

But, their farm life may soon be disturbed.

"We like the serenity. It's not that we are against guns, we just don't want them shooting in our backyard,” said Polly Carney, Carney Farms.

"They can't guarantee that the bullets are going to go in the dirt every time,” said Paul Carney, Carney Farms.

The Carneys aren't alone.

According to them, there are 50 homes in a 3 mile radius of the proposed range.

Dan Schaeffer is also in that area.

"It's the "what ifs." What if someone gets shoot? You can't replace a life,” said Dan Schaeffer, Schaeffer Farms.

The proposed range is something the Jerome County Commissioners have talked about for years and it's on the agenda once again.

"My idea for Monday is just to get a vote of yes or no from the Commissioners. This is just so we can decide whether or not to sponsor it or to not pass it. Then it will go to a public hearing. BLM will look at everything from sound to aesthetics to is this a practical place to put a gun range?” said Charlie Howell, Jerome County Commissioner.

Putting a gun range among the farmland, sage brush and wildlife, it's something the Carneys describe as unacceptable.

The Jerome County Commissioners are looking over the proposal on Monday at 2 pm.

They're expecting the Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management and the applicant of the rifle range to be at the meeting.

Wow! Less than 2 homes for every square mile!

No, they are not against guns. They just don't want anyone to shoot them.

This is some of the lowest population density in the country. You have to be in a national forest or park to get lower"

At three miles, the odds of the average bullet doing real damage to you is minimal, first off. Even heavier caliber bullets like a 7 mag, .460 or a .30-06 will be heavily weakened by that point. Second, people who actually own and understand firearms will be the ones building the range, not people ignorant of the possibilities. I can guarantee, especially if this is a private endeavor, that every safety precaution will be taken.

There are plenty of areas in Idaho with much lower densities, and there are plenty of places over there around Jerome where they could orient the gun range to shoot away from any houses within any effectual range of the long rifles.

That's all they need to do. Find a place where they can orient the shooting towards foothills or other areas where there are no homes at all. We have such a range here in Emmett. ID...and a lot of us simply go up into the the hills themselves and shoot into bluffs or cliffs at 2-300 yards distant where there is not a soul, or home, or structure of any sort.

“Putting a gun range among the farmland, sage brush and wildlife,...”

It’s an IDEAL place to put a range.

Where else? in the center of town?

Bone-heads.

I would love to have a range next door.

I was visiting a friend who set up a machine gun in his backyard, and was firing tracers into the side of a hill on his property about 1/2 a mile away.

“Is there anybody hiking out there?” I asked.

“Shouldn’t be!” he said, as he racked in another magazine.

Growing up on 80 acres in S. Georgia, 6 miles outside of a town that only has a population of 20k, I can tell you: the sounds of gun shots in the distance are just as much a part of “nature” as crickets at night.

These hippies moved from the city to create a reality that they’ve only read about in books.

Side tantrum: Organic farms are only as pure as the chemical-loving farmer up-wind... hippies.

If that silly reporter had come to my house the only quote he would have gotten was, “Gun range!? How soon can I get out there, will it be public, and is there a yearly fee? And do you know a place where I can get non-organic strawberries?”

"Organic 'straw' farm" -- think that's a hint?

Bet them ol'timers been raisin' that genyuwine "Organic 'straw'" on that there land since 'way back in twenty-ought nine, at least...right??

And that "three mile radius" covers a full 360 degrees. Do they thinks those folks are going to be shooting over their shoulders -- or at 90 degrees -- up and down the firing line? Or, even a whole ten degrees left or right of the backstop?

My range is less than a half mile from our house, and sometimes the grandkids will come in and say, "sounds like somebody's down at the range", and I'll answer, "Yeah, cousin Jim's down there trying out his new .40. But -- as usual -- we haven't heard a thing here inside the house..."

Sounds like a plague of two liberal city slicker buttinskis have moved out there under God's sky -- so they can tell all the folks who settled that land -- and have owned it through several generations -- how they should live their lives... :-(

They probably got a lot of responses like yours. They just did not report them.

I do hope that all the burglars, biker gangs and sociopaths all miss the part about the rich hipster farmers in Idaho who don’t believe in guns (and practically volunteered their address)...you can’t throw straw at Helter Skelter.

It is amazing what a ruckus just a small number of the critters can cause, especially if they find support in the local media.

One of the things we like about our neighborhood is that we can hear folks practicing, especially on the weekends. The CC&Rs say no shooting on your property, which is happily and universally ignored.

I say to the Missus, “Hear that? That’s the sound of freedom.”
