FReeper Canteen ~ Sunday Chapel ~ U-571 ~ 28 August 2011
Serving The Best Troops and Veterans In The World !! | The Canteen Crew

Posted on 08/27/2011 5:00:53 PM PDT by Kathy in Alaska

U-571

U-571 is a truly an "on the edge of your seat" film about a US Navy crew trying to sail a Nazi U-Boat to England in 1942 (won't explain how that happens, see the movie). In one scene, the boat is attacked by depth charges from a German destroyer. The crew turns to the young skipper for guidance and asks what they should do to save the boat and their lives. He says he doesn't know.

Somehow they survive this attack. The wise, crusty Chief then has a fatherly chat with the skipper in a quiet moment over coffee. He explains that he let the crew down because they need to believe he knows everything, even when he doesn't. Why? Because their lives are in his hands, they have to have absolute confidence in the ability, knowledge and judgment of their skipper.

A submarine crew needs to have confidence in their skipper. We need to have confidence in ourselves. So often, the difference between success and failure is not intelligence or innate ability, but attitude! Many people condition themselves into believing they aren't as smart or capable as other people. They suffer from low self esteem. Even though they are every bit as intelligent as the next person, because they constantly down-rate themselves, they think they can never be successful. Eventually, their belief that they are doomed to fail becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.

We must live with a strong confidence (not to say, arrogance) in our abilities and potential. This confidence will fuel our will to succeed, and once again, the belief we can do the job and succeed becomes self-fulfilling prophesy. We are all Winners!

Chaplain Mitch Schranz, USN

Failure To Discipline
August 28, 2011

We live in the woods, so we get very little prolonged sunlight in the summer. But we love fresh tomatoes, so I decided to try growing them in pots set in a few sunny spots.

The plants started to grow right away and really fast. I was thrilled—until I realized that their fast growth was due to their efforts to reach out to the limited sunlight. By the time I figured out what was happening, the vines were too heavy to support themselves. I found some stakes, lifted the vines carefully, and fastened them in an upright position. Even though I tried to be gentle, one of the twisted vines broke when I tried to straighten it.

This reminded me that discipline must begin before character is permanently bent and twisted.

Eli the priest had two sons whom he failed to discipline. When their wickedness got so bad that he could no longer ignore it, he tried gentle rebuke (1 Sam. 2:24-25). But it was too late, and God announced the dire consequences: “I will judge [Eli’s] house forever for the iniquity which he knows, because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them” (3:13).

Being straightened out is painful, but being left crooked will ultimately hurt even more.

Lord, even though it’s painful, we’re thankful that
You, in love, discipline us as Your children.
Help us to respond with repentance and obedience
to Your ways. Amen.

God’s love confronts and corrects.

Read: 1 Samuel 2:27-36

No chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness. —Hebrews 12:11

We're still waiting for the fireworks to start. Not feeling too bad - getting around with a walker. The swelling and bruising in my left quad is going to take some time to abate.

He Who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - may He bless the fighters of the Israel Defense Force, who stand guard over our land and the cities of our G-d from the border of the Lebanon to the desert of Egypt, and from the Great Sea unto the approach of the Aravah, on the land, in the air, and on the sea.

May HASHEM cause the enemies who rise up against us to be struck down before them. May the Holy One, Blessed is He, preserve and rescue our fighting men from every trouble and distress and from every plague and illness, and may He send blessing and success in their every endeavor.

May He lead our enemies under their sway and may He grant them salvation and crown them with victory. And may there be fulfilled for them the verse: For it is Hashem, your G-d, Who goes with you to battle your enemies for you to save you.

G-d bless and keep your children safe, Alouette.

Good news about using the walker...relieves the “pressure” of worrying about the knees and their displeasure with back issues. Hope your healing comes quickly.

Stay safe! *HUGS*
