(CBS/WJTV/AP) JACKSON, Miss. - Deryl Dedmon, a white teen who is being charged in the hit-and-run death of a black man in Mississippi, could now face the death penalty in what authorities are calling a hate crime.
Dedmon, 19, was initially charged with murder, but Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith says he has new evidence that shows the victim, 49-year-old James Anderson, was robbed before he was killed, which makes it a capital case, reports CBS affiliate WJTV.

Do you think they would have reported this if it was the other way around? Not likely.
Kind of ironic. Mississippi will hang this dirtbag for a “hate crime” and Wisconsin gives africans a pass when they commit them.
If it was an intentional killing, the killer should die. This has nothingt to do with hate or robbing.
It sounds like the death penalty is appropriate.
The headline was a bit confusing. From the title I thought the perp was a beauty pageant winner.
Sounds about right for what he did.
My first glance at the headline, I though it was a beauty pageant winner. Miss Teen Deryl...
I did a double take when I clicked on the link and saw his picture.
I did too. I went to the link to check “her” pic.
Skipped right over the perps first name...
I haven’t seen a USA Today in a couple of years.
Last I heard they were dying with the slow down in
hotel travelers.
LOL! Thanks!!! I thought the same thing.
If the article is correct, accurate and true I have no problem with the death penalty.
Remember Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom of Tennessee.
Probably true, but I’m a bit surprised on how little this has been covered in the news.
Same here. I was expecting pictures with some "not guilty" comments.
Not likely.
Yes, this story tricked me too ~ when I saw the guy's picture I said "Oh, how the mighty MISS TEEN contest has fallen ~ that's a dude!"
I thought that at first too.
Me too.
What a tragedy this man lost his life.
“...white teen who is being charged in the hit-and-run death of a black man in Mississippi,...”
Interesting how the race of the two participants in this news story is mentioned. It’s so rare.
...I thought the perp was a beauty pageant winner...
